Recycling in HK

I've been trying to recycle at my serviced apartment (separating recyclables) but the once a week maid and the rubbish lady just combine it with other garbage.

Does anyone know of a place in Sheung Wan where I can drop off my recycling? Do they accept everything?

Also, did anyone catch the segment on Star News the other day on the recycling plants in China? Great Britain is exporting their recycling to China since it's cheaper than doing it in their own country. The toxic fumes make work conditions are deplorable and deadly and the salary for a worker is about 75USD a month. Also, the dumping of the unwanted sludge is harming the environment. I'm sure this is where HK recycling is handled. Anyone have an idea of a way around it other than pre-cycling?

Thanks!

I've actually read about Britain sending their rubbish to China for recycling. Not sure how to view it. On one hand, I'm like, can't the British deal with their rubbish and recycle them on their own and prevent the toxic fumes from killing people in China. But on the other hand, it's cheaper and I guess whatever that's cheaper, countries tend to outsource it. Guess this is the same with rubbish as well. Funny, how some countries can't deal with their own rubbish.

On the issue of recycling, not sure where you can recycle in Sheungwan. In my estate, there's a recycling station at every block and even the school that I work at.

Hi,

It's nice to know there are so people like you guys concern about the re-cyling issues. Sometimes, I feel I'm weird person upset for the small matters when I see the restaurants only provide wooden chocksticks, people only drinking bottle water at home, keeping throwing away the shoes, etc...

Although I'm not really tried that hard to do everything to be more enviromental friendly, but I do try to use the soap (it's not cost saving at all :-) ) to replace the plastic bottle shower gel.
Bring the water from home, not to consume glass bottle soft drinks although I like to drink peach favor Snappers. I still wear the clothes I brought it 10 years ago just make it mix and match.

So many times, I struggle to call to the restaurants (i.e. Tong Dynasty in Canton Road) to ask if they could use plastic chopsticks and not to give such a thick n big plastic bag even for one lunch box only...

Do I sounds weird again??

We sadly don't have any recycling facilities in our block, so I end up taking a bag of stuff with me whenever I go to the local shopping centre as they have bins there (which don't take glass bizarrely). I get some very strange looks from people when they realise I'm carrying rubbish around with me, but nevermind!

I used to do a lot of work for Dept. for Environment back home (UK) so this is a subject close to my heart....

Send me a private message incase I forget. I'll find the name of the company that collects the recycled stuff from our building. Sometimes all it takes is a note to the owners corporation of the building to encourage them to allow the company to put the recycling bins on the property.
