Does anyone know about the salary structure for the Hong Kong Securities and Future Commission? I have over 6 years of Securities Compliance and regulatory experience and over 10 years of industry experience in the US market and currently considering moving to Hong Kong. Getting a comparable pay is one of my major concern. I am looking for US$150k annual salary. Is it a farfetched figure for the HK Gov't job?

Have you got a HK ID card? Apparently holding a 3 stars HK ID card can only work for the government and knowing how to speak and write in English, Cantonese and Mandarin is also a big bonus.

I could be right or wrong on this, need someone else to back me up on this one.

Yes that is right to the best of my knowledge. English and Cantonese would be required however and Mandarin a big bonus.

I think the salary you may want is going to be highly unlikely.

Having said that .. there is a lot more to be made working for the US investment banks from what I hear.

Thanks for all your info. I am not a HK resident, although my wife has a 3 stars HK ID. We were told by the HK immigration office that once I moved to HK they will issue a one star HK ID. A 3 stars HK ID can be issued once I have lived there for seven years. I speak and write fluent English, Cantonese and Mandarin. What I am hearing from you guys is that the SFC job just does not work for my situation. Any advise on how I should approach this job hunting thing? Thanks.

Don't worry about salary you may get in HK. Even now civil servants in HK (assuming this apply to the job you are seeking) are very well paid. It is not uncommon (here) to have civil servants with higher salary compared to their private sector counterparts (which is IMHO unhealthy for the economy).

Unless the rules have changed recently you do not have to be ethnic Chinese and/or know Cantonese and/or Mandarin to be a civil servant (although the number of jobs might be limited).
I have a number of gweilo friends who are civil servants.
Some of them have a highly visible profile (newspaper/TV).

You obviously misunderstood the officer. A one-star ID is the equivalent of a 3* ID but for people between the ages of 11 and 17 years. See http://www.smartid.gov.hk/en/faq/index.html#00ac
