Smile NET EMB Living Allowances

Hi, I am going to apply for a position under the EMB NET Scheme. I have noted in the contract that there are conditons attached to the living allowances. It seems to suggest you are only entitled to these if you retain a house hold in the UK. Is this correct?

Also has anyone any experiences as a EMB NET in HK? What are the schools and students like? Would you recommend it?

I am about to take a CertTESOL.

Best wishes

Paul

As long as you can prove that you don't live in HK or if you apply for the job from your home country, you'll get the housing allowance. Most NETs get their housing allowance. Unless, you're married to another NET, then one of you has to give up the housing allowance.

I work as a NET and comparing to working as a homeroom or form teacher, it's lot less work. Less stressful and kids are generally nice and my work environment is pleasant. Won't say that it's absolutely great though. But then again, it depends on the school that you get. If you have a teaching degree or postgrad cert in teaching, don't bother with the cert in TESOL first. I don't have mine yet and the school is not asking for it. You have time to do it here, it might be cheaper here as well. The contract normally says that you need to complete the cert in the first contract before the next contract is given to you.

Hope this is useful

Hi, thanks for the reply. That is really useful.

I don’t have any teaching qualifications so I think the CertTesol is essential. I don’t fancy trying to teach without some training although I have been told by EMB that it’s not essential (as long as you get it in the first two years). I guess it may be difficult for me to get a position with no training or experience but it’s worth a try.

Do you get to choose which school you teach at? Do they stipulate where you must live or can you choose?

Many thanks

Paul

If you don't have any teaching qualifications, doing a cert in Tesol is a good idea. That'll allow you a better chance of getting into the NET scheme. Another thing, without a teaching qualification, I think at some point of time, in terms with your salary, you will not be able to go beyond a certain point.

The school that I'm working at called me for a phone interview and I was given time to think through and research before saying yes to them. I've known of other NETS that have rejected about 3 schools before saying yes. Basically it was a situation of the location of the school and what band the school is in. The school doesn't really care where you live as long as you can get to school on time! I chose to live right next to the school so that I can sleep in. Transport is not every expensive but it's just trying to squeeze with everyone on the MTR during rush hours.

Feel free to ask me more questions if you need to.
