As the company is paying for our family to relocate to HK in August, I'm considering taking white goods, with HK plugs fitted. Have any Australians at geoexpats done this? Opinions?

I did a search and saw that when someone asked this in 2005 someone replied that most flats already have a washing machine. Do people feel that this is generally the case? Do they have dryers? I have lovely, big Fischer and Paykel stuff that is still under warranty.

The key word in your post is BIG, and BIG just doesn't go in most flats in Hong Kong. Generally speaking, the white goods (washers, dryers, fridges, etc) are scaled down to HK apartment size, and many flats are built to accept these slimmed down models.

If you have a flat sorted and know the dimensions of your laundry area (closet, corner, etc) then you might be able to figure out if it is worth it, but option B is sell them and buy something new (if needed) when you get to HK.

I agree...my advise is don't bring it unless you've already rented an apartment in HK where you know (in advance) that it'll fit. Most newer apartments will have white goods built-in which the landlord won't move. Older apartments have very limited space where your items probably won't fit (for example, we keep the fridge in the living room in our apartment since there's no space in the kitchen). Everyone I've known that's come across w/ big white goods has regretted it & had to store/sell them here.

If it's still under warranty, sell it on eBay and you'll get a good price for it... I sold all of my stuff on eBay before I left Australia and the new stuff still under warranty sold REALLY well - I sold a two year old dryer for A$300 when I only paid A$400 for it brand new!! But you really don't want to bring BIG white goods over here...

Thanks everyone for your insights. I will plan to sell on e-bay, but I'll probably wait until my employer has details about the place they're providing, on the off-chance there are no white goods provided, and there is room for mine.

my wife and I wish to sell everythings (all furniture and white goods and applcainces..and more ....) B4 we move to HK. we ring up a few companies sepcialise in second hand furniture but they dun seemed to be interested in it. of course we heard of ebay but it is really possible to sell our stuffs there??? how to arrnage shipping tec if the buyer is not in sydney?? ..pls pls help

I sold a bunch of stuff on ebay - I said when I listed it that it was for pick-up only, or the buyer could arrange the details/costs of their own shipping if they wanted it shipped. I lived in Wollongong, and I had someone come to pick something up all the way from Hornsby!! (nearly 2 hrs drive away!!) - people are willing to travel quite far actually... And personally, I think that I got a better price on eBay than I would have gotten other ways... of course you win some lose some - some stuff probably could have sold for a bit more in trading post etc, but at least I didn't have to worry about the hassle of it all!!
