Hi,

I'm just wondering where in Hong Kong you can do a Diploma of Education or the equivalent. I have a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, a grad cert in Mathematics, and want to get my diped or equiv to be able to teach at a high school level.

I was also wondering, if I do my diploma of education over in Hong Kong, how "recognised" would it be back in Australia?

You should contact the Education Dept in your State in Oz re recognition. They are usually okay with OS degrees but can take months to process the paperwork.

Do any of the other unis/colleges offer similar programmes? I'm not even sure what unis there ARE in Hong Kong!!

I would advise you to apply for the PGDE program at the University of Hong Kong. The hours are better (5:30 - 7:30 pm / 8 pm) and it's twice a week in the first year. Then it's just once a week in the second year.

I heard that at Chinese University, majority of the courses are taught in Cantonese. As for HK Institute of Education, well, I read a paper written someone who is studying the first year of PGDE there and was completely floored. Frankly, if I had submitted that paper to HKU, I would have failed right away.

A quick word about HKU's PGDE. If you value your sanity, avoid the major of Primary English.

I just got accepted on the PGDE at HKU. As I'm from the UK, I was also concerned if this qualification would be recognised back home (before I waste alot of time and money) and apparently ALL overseas trained teachers have to take a short course to bring them up to speed on the English national curriculum. It sounds fine so I'm not too worried about that.

However, I picked Primary English as my major but am now worried about the above comment!! What was the problem?

I 2nd what Koppi C said. In my opinion the course isn't organised very well and not very practical if you are new to teaching. The tutor is unhelpful to say the least.

Just my 2P.

P.S. Check out the qualifications of the tutor before you attend any course. If you are not being taught by someone with a degree in Education, if I were you, I would think twice. I'm not talking about someone with an MA in TESOL.

Yep, tutor for that major has been a nightmare and has no experience teaching primary students. Likely to have a nervous breakdown just trying to do the assignments and coping with last minute changes to your lesson plan less than 48 hours before class observations. I know of folks who switched their majors after the first year just to avoid having the same tutor again. And yes, you are stuck with the same tutor for two years. Thank God I'm almost done!

I would be doing my pgde this year, since I still have time and not doing much , is there any short teachers course which I could to get a part time job in a kindergarten, or a part time teacher in a school.

I just got into the postgraduate diapolma in education majoring Economics in the University of Hong Kong for this academic yr 2007/08, classes start this Sept. As I know, HKU is the only university taught this course in English, the other two, the Chinese University and Institute of Education are taught in Chinese.

However, the deadline of application was last month (Jan 15) for all three schools for this academic yr. Interviews and list of accepted students have been done and announced. I already paid the deposit ($11,000, about 1/4 of the total fee early this month). But I think you can call the school department to find out if they still have vacancy (i think they do , if you are taking chemistry).
