Nope - there are about 1000 bars around HK that have got exemptions, including Bar George, Cavern, Brew House, Cochrane's Delaney's Dusk til Dawn, etc. etc. etc.

Really true, PDLM?? But does it make any sense? Either you ban it or you don't. I thought that there are are no exemptions at all...

Had heard something about a grace period for bars .. to be phased out by 2008.

30th June 2009 actually.

The complete list of bars granted exemptions is here:
http://www.tobaccocontrol.gov.hk/eng...ments.html#bar
Which rather makes a mockery of the whole concept.

Personally I would need a very good reason indeed to go into a smoking bar now - it is so much more pleasant in places like Bulldogs now that the smokers have to go outside to indulge.

The paperwork I have seen regarding it is pubs for 18 and over only get to smoke until June 30 2009 as well as mahjong parlor, and massage parlor. Not sure what else.

Restaurant and clubs that serve all ages as well as parks were banned this time.

Yeah, I obviously misunderstood. I thought that regular bars were covered, but nightclubs - places which are more for dancing than sitting and drinking - could be exempt if they enforced an age limit. Pity, really - does make the whole thing less useful, given the length of the list of bars

I feel pretty stupid that I did not know abt the partial ban. It seems so strange that either I missed a lot of text in the SCMP or it was kept quiet?
The first time I ever saw this list was when PDLM posted it.

Half assed smoking ban basically.

Exclamation Damn!

I absolutely HATE smoking bars and restaurants. We're not young kids who don't care about their skin and health at the first place. Secondly, my hair and clothes smell like sh1t before washed. People have taken good care of themsleves by working out and watching their diet. Now the second-hand smoking ruins all.

Ahhhh, I'm sorry for being bitchy but folks, could we go to a non-smoking one this time? Definitely want to see you guys on Friday.
