Thinking of getting a Treo 750v - worth waiting for PalmOS version

I haven't owned a Palm for a while and thinking of getting one. I had a look and found a Palm 750v for sale with the Windows Mobile OS. Asked a colleague at work and he suggested it was better I wait for the 750v with the Palm OS that is due out in a month or so.

Can anyone tell me why? Ie what features will it have that the Windows OS doesn't have?

Will the reliability / battery life / availability of 3rd party software be any different between the two models?

Thanks

You can expect significantly better stability and performance with Palm OS. I use Windows Mobile 5.0 now and it sucks.

Thanks Jay

From what you are saying it sounds like a better idea to wait until the Palm OS version comes out.

I would also like to integrate it with Lotus Notes at work. I don't suppose the different OS will make any difference.

Anyone here own a 750? Good / Bad points?

The only thing that turned me off of a 750 was that there is no Wi-fi. I'm using WM5 on a Dopod and it seems very stable compared to friends using O2's.

Um...

As far as I know - and I'm going to stick my neck out and say I knew reasonably well - there are no public plans for a 750p, as it would be. In fact, the 700 is the only model for which Palm have released both a w and p version, and I would think I'm relatively safe to say that it's not that likely they'll do it again.

You may be referring to the 680 as the PalmOS version of the 750v - it's similarly specced, but is not the same device running different software. The differences, each way:

The 680 has a 320x320 screen, but the 750 only has 240x240.
The 680 has a VGA (640x480) camera, while the 750 has a 1.3 mpixel (1280x1024) camera.
They apparently have different processors, although the same architecture running at about the same speed.
The 680 has an SD slot, while the 750 appears to have a miniSD slot.
The 680 may be slightly thinner, back to front.
It seems they have the same amount of memory on paper, but the differences between the OSs should mean you have more for yourself on PalmOS.
The 680 only does EDGE/GPRS/GSM, while the 750 does UMTS.
The 680 comes in different colours - I don't think the 750 does.

That's what I see from some quick research. I've held a 680 and had a bit of a play with it - they should be on the market now, AFAIK, and, well, it felt like a minor rev to the 650. Nicer form factor, nicer screen, more memory, better software - but not a next-gen machine.

my mom just gave me a 750v and my main gripe is the damn screen. astraware games that i used to play on my other winmobile/pocketpc devices look like crap on it (it's squished).

other than that it's a capable phone. if i'm not mistaken it's using a more updated winmobile (v.5.2).

i'm still playing around with it so i can't say much just yet. i had a treo 650 a while back and the 680 isn't much of an upgrade.

Sorry for the slight thread highjack, but you guys seem to know what you're talking about.... on the subject of smartphones - I recently saw the E-Ten Glofiish X700 / M500 phones and they look pretty good. What do you guys think?

They're for sale in Hong Kong but only with Chinese OS - would it be possible to install the English OS onto one of these?

thanks!
