The granddaughter of renowned philanthropist Tang King-po gave up a lucrative investment banking career to open a gourmet shop six years ago to pursue her passion for food. Today her store is thriving.
"All the people who love me love cooking," says Belinda Wong Sheung-yu. "Since I was small, I was allowed in the kitchen to `help out' my favourite servant and mother in their cooking. To me, food is a way people express their love for me."
The 40-year-old entrepreneur, who always has a warm smile, says she decided to venture into a retail business selling brands of gourmet foods rarely seen in the city because she wanted to devote more time to her passion for food. Her store boasts exquisite jams from Spain, different varieties of Japanese rice and various European hams and cheeses.
"When people travel, they may want to look at architecture or visit some tourist attractions. But I go to the food markets, restaurants and street-side eateries and see what people eat."
Ms Wong invested all her savings in the store - even though she was unsure of how receptive the city's consumers would be to the uncommon and expensive merchandise she brought in from around the world.
"My family was opposed to my decision initially as they were worried that I would lose everything if the business failed.
"But at that time I had already signed a lease for five years and I had no option but to stick with it."
She says the business weathered the slump during the Sars epidemic in 2003 and is now proving popular with workers in Central who want to splash out their hard-earned pay on exotic foods to take home.
"Most of our customers are working women. I once was a working woman and understand that they do not enjoy having ordinary restaurant food all the time. With the fine goodies I have at the store they can prepare superb meals by themselves."
The cooking enthusiast has recently published an English-language book, titled Life is a Banquet, in which she reveals little-known facts about the Tang family as well as her recipes.

Ms Wong, a lawyer by training, says she did not feel much pressure being a descendant of a famous personality.
"My late grandfather was a low-profile person and so is our family. And I never aspire to achieve something great. I am just an ordinary person who loves eating. It happens that I have this opportunity to open a shop and do something I really like. I totally enjoy it."

It's called Bon Bon Bon and it's in the Luk Hoi Tong building, which is at the junction of Queen's Road Central and Theatre Lane.

Can't be 360 ( Landmark) as that's from the Dairy Farm Group. Neither is it any of the larger gourmet food shops like Great ( Pacific Place), Taste ( Festival Walk), Gourmet ( Lee Gardens) or Oliver's (Prince's Building). Nor can it be the new cheese heaven called Classified (108 Hollywood Road, ph 2525 3444) , or any of the many Italian delis around town.

My guess is a small gourmet food shop that I've heard about but not been to, in Central, on the 2nd or 3rd floors of one of the buildings in Queen's Rd Central or Dudell Street. Will get the name tomorrow
