1920x1080 isn't that high. You will be just fine using something like a GeForce 7900 or Radeon x1950.

But then again, you probably spent around $50,000 HKD on your TV, so what's another $5K?

That is what I was thinking, given that most current medium-high end LCD monitors display at much higher resolutions.

Mpeg acceleration might be worth it on a good htpc .. but still ...

For games, especially new ones....such a card isn't overkill.

Figured it was games about 30 seconds after I pressed submit.

Yes, MPEG-2 acceleration on the NVIDIA cards make a HUGE difference. I'm actually not sure what features G80 has over previous top end cards in terms of this though. NVIDIA doesn't list it on their PureVideo comparison sheet.

The 8800 GTX is faster than TWO of the previous fastest cards. That's pretty much overkill at this point

But it's always a good idea to get the fastest within your means. Obviously you're very rich and aren't afraid to show that, so the 8800 would be a good choice for you. Others with 1080p, I'd say go for something a little more reasonable. Wait for DX10, and new mid-to-high end cards to come out. And of course, wait and see what R600 is going to be like. If XBOX 360 is any indication, it will be very impressive.

The 8800 GTX is a DX10 card though.

The R600 looks interesting, I am sure it will be difficult to buy for a while. My current card is a Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition and it was an absolute pain to buy after the launch date.

Yes, but it's definitely not a 'mid to high' end card

Like I said, in your case, go for the most expensive. That's the advice!
