Exchange Student...looking for an internship/part-time job. Thanks a lot! Hello guys, I'm really new to this since I'm not even in HK yet!! But it seems that everybody is quite helful in this forum... I have a couple of questions and wonder if somebody had the same experience that could help me out with that: I'm gonna be a visiting student(Masters in Finance) from the U.S in one of the very prestigious univ. in HK for Spring 2007. I've been told that if I could ask for permission from my faculty, I would be able to apply for some paperwork in the inmigration office that will allow me to work legally in HK for my 6 months stay. And also, I'm looking for a part-time job that would not interfere with my studies but supports me in my living expenses. I'm in my 2 semester as Masters in Finance and I speak fluently Chinese Mandarin(I'm originally from mainland China), Spanish(I lived in Mexico for 10 years) and English(I started my undergrad degree in the U.S). I woulf prefer to find a job related to Finance that could give some experience on the field but on a temporary basis. I may want to come back to HK after I graduate, but for now I'm only gonna b here for 6 months. Do you have any recommendations?? Thanks very much for your help

before you check out jobs, i'd suggest contacting the immig dept directly and asking them what the possibilities are. genereally, if you are on a student visa, you are NOT allowed to work. not only that, work visas are NOT granted for part-time work. i'm not saying this to discourage you, rather just so you can get the "real" answers from the gov't as to what is possible. good luck!

I'm no expert here, but be sure to distinguish between on- and off-campus work when you check with the immigration people. Some places (eg. UK, US) allow people on student visas to take up temporary jobs at their place of study, ie, on-campus, as teaching assistants etc. Working off-campus is generally more complicated. Not sure what the HK policy is. Better yet, if you can secure a part-time job from a large multinational employer before arriving in HK I am sure they are familiar with the legal ramifications involved and may take care of the paperwork for you. Many banks already do this when they hire interns from overseas and stuff.
