ISP and Telephone provider

Hi, not sure if this is the right place for this, but here goes...

I'm about to move into my apartment in Robinson Road and need to get a telephone line and broadband rigged up. Any suggestions or recommendations?

My default choice is just going to be PCCW and Netvigator... and I guess I may consider bundling in NOW TV later... any good?

Also, looking on the Netvigator website, what is the difference between the single user and multiuser package? Coming from the UK, I did not have this choice and I always made it multi user with a router and NAT. Is there a technical reason why this is not possible with the single user package?

Thanks

W

Single user is fine - no problem putting a router on the end. Multi-user would give you more Netvigator email addresses if you had other people living with you who wanted one.

Be aware that Robinson Road is actually quite some distance from the PCCW exchange, so the quality of the cable to the block and of the building wiring may limit the speeds you can get on your broadband. My apartment block had this problem a while back (both low speed and very frequent connection drops) and eventually enough people complained that PCCW put fibre into the basement, so now we have the capability for up to 25MB/s, which means HDTV. All it needs now is for NOW to launch the service!

Thanks for the info...

One furthre questions... just noticed that Netvigator has a 24 month plan or a no-commitment one. I would like a 12 month plan... do they do that? what happens if I need to terminate after a year?

Cheers

If you call them, you'll find out that a lot more options are available -- beyond what is on their website. Or ... go down to Wanchai computer center / Sogo in Causeway bay and talk to one of their outdoor sales people ....

Thanks for the tips guys...

I just called PCCW (not been to their shops yet) and they only offered an 18 month contract or the monthly contract. The monthly contract comes with a time limit each month (no good). I asked for a 12 month contract but they were just not willing to budge on that at all...

Do the shops have more flexibility?

I think if you are looking for quiality broadband i suggest you go with Hong Kong Broadband (HKB) they offer 100MB and 1000MB broadband speed using Fiber Optic.

But if you are looking for something with phoneline, I think Hatchison can provide you with Fiber Optic Broadband and and telephone like packages..

>> Do the shops have more flexibility?

Walk over to Sogo in Causeway Bay, or the Wanchai Computer center and you'll see a number of mobile booths setup -- fully equipped with super aggressive sales guys, ready and willing to cut you a good deal.

Generally, they offer better discounts and deals than the call centers or the shops.

If you are lucky, the salesman/saleslady will give half of there commission back to you.. and a couple of Park N Shop Gift Certificate..
