Two questions about taxes

G'day mate.

First, if I worked in Hong Kong for 4 months this year, do they use the total income I earned to calculate the taxes I have to pay, or do they multiply it by 3, and then divide by 3 the total taxes I have to pay, as they do in some places in Europe?

Second, may I go to a bank and ask the financial advisor or something to help me fill in the form (or at least to have a look at it after I fill it in)? Is there such a service in HK?

Actually I have one more question:

My employer does NOT provide me with a place of redisence, but it provides me with a housing allowance (which it said is not taxable).

Note 6 of the 'notes and instructions' talks about what to fill in if the employer provides me with a place of residence.

For 2 months I lived in a place where I paid 2,000$ more than the employer's housing allowance. For 2 months I lived in a place which costs 2,000$ less than the employer's housing allowance. How do I have to fill in the form?

Thanks a lot.

The housing allowance is not taxed directly, but it will increase the taxable value of your package by 10% of the rest of your salary+bonus. (This is discussed asd nauseam here - please do a search).

Only the total figures during the tax year are important. You'll be taxed on the totals. And for the housing allowance in aggregate your housing allowance matched your spending so I believe there will be no adjustment necessary.

But you are aware that the tax year runs April - March? So I don't understand why you would be filling in a tax form at this point for the year April 2006-March 2007.

If you are leaving HK you are supposed to file before you leave. Not sure if that is the case here.

I am not leaving HK. I got a tax form from the Inland Revenue Department on December 8 to be returned by January 8. I didn't know that the tax year runs April - March. Am I the only one to have received the tax form now???

I would say that's more likely to be a problem with the information your HR/Payroll people sent them...
