Hey,

I know asking about noise bylaws in Hong Kong is probably a joke, but....there is some repair work going on in my building in a flat a few floors down. It is SO loud! They might as well be in my apartment. This has been going on for weeks now. Luckily, I'm working most of the day, but am greeted to this loud drilling and hammering when I get home. Also, they go full force from Saturday morning to Saturday evening. Does anyone know if there are certain times when they are allowed to start and supposed to stop?

I tried calling the manangement company for my building, but they hang up on me everytime I call as soon as they realize I speak English. I don't even get an um goy or sorry! They don't say anything in English or Cantonese...just, click.

Anyway, I'd appreciate if anyone has some information.

Anything goes .... from 7AM to 7PM Mon-Sat ... public holidays are excluded.

how about a bylaw making it legal to beat people senseless that make excessive noise, especially after 11pm!

You can call the cops after 7PM.

If you report them you'll have the cops at you neighbours door in 30-45 minutes. Let them do the beating ..

Would that be making excessive noise after 11pm or beating them senseless after 11pm (I'm for the latter).

Find out the main office number for your management company and ring them to complain in English. Write a complaint if that fails. I had a similar problem some years back and it worked.

Or... do the angry gwailo thing ... go down the the management office and refuse to move until someone acknowledges your presence and says they'll look at it. Will not work if its a 80 year old retired ninja... but ....

Any suggestions for this scenario - the new neighbor downstairs has such a loud alarm clock (that goes off at 5AM every day) that I hear it louder than I hear my own.

I can better that one ... the neighbour upstairs from me wakes me up in the middle of the night by peeing from what seems a great height into the toilet bowl water. Now if he could only move it over a couple of inches ...
