Dependent Visa and working

Hello!

I have seen quite a few threads on this subject, but I would like to confirm if my understanding is correct.

Me and my wife will be arriving in HK in a few weeks. I have an employment visa and my wife has been granted a dependent visa.

Can my wife work once we arrive in HK given that she has a dependent visa only? What would she need to do (other than find a job!)...

Lastly, what do we need to do to get our HK resident cards?

Thanks & kind regards,

Jake

HK ID Card -- visit the immigration with your passport and you'll be fingerprinted and photographed, takes about an hour to 90 minutes.

Dependant Visa -- as far as I know, nothing additional needs to be done to work on a dependant's visa.

Yes, your wife should be able to work on a dependant's visa. Hubby is working and he's on a dependent visa as well. Regulations changed in May, this year, I think.

KIA,

Isn't it working on a dependent visa legally? I thought that only dependent of a Permanent HK ID holder can work, Dependent of a Work visa holder can't, am I right?

nope, you're wrong...anyone on a dependent visa CAN work. this is the way it was for many years, then the gov't in its infinite wisdom (note the sarcasm) decided to stop allowing dependents to work. this lasted for about 3 or 4 years and earlier this year it was rescinded and the law reverted to what it was before, that is ALLOWING dependents to work.

That's not quite true. Anyone dependent on a Permanent Resident or someone holding an Employment Visa or a Capital Investment Visa can work. Dependents on people holding training / study visas cannot. See Q5 here: http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/faq_hkv.htm

So what about if I'm a dependent and my hubby has his permanent ID card? Can I work or not? I've heard mixed things...

You should be able to work. Hubby is working and he is on a dependant visa. I'm on an employment visa.
