Trouble formatting DVD-RAM

Has anyone used these disks? On first use I can't format the disk. The error is "Unable to complete format" or something like that.

I'm using Windows Explorer, right-clicking on the DVD-RAM drive and choosing Format then Start. Should work I know but fails after 10 minutes or so. Did you use it straight out of the box or did you format it first? Mine's a single layer single side disk.

Do you have CDROM + or -? Make sure you CDROM Drive is compatable with you CDs. Another reason might that you CDs are no good. Make
sure they are the name brands like Sony, Maxell, or Memorex. I have used some no names, and they are all junk and failed 40% of the time
and when they worked, they don't play on my DVD player. Very frustrating!

discobay : DVD ram's needed to be formated ... as far as I know my toshiba / XP did not have native support for DVD RAM and I have to use a toshiba driver and utility to format the drive.

One thing, whenever my notebook startsup (its 2 years old so things may have changed with newer releases of XP) I get prompted .. do you wish to burn CD ROMS.. if you do, please disable the DVD-RAM driver.

Woody, I have an ASUS writer which reads and writes CDs, DVD -R/+R/-RW/+RW/RAM.
KIA, my understanding is that XP does have native support for DVD-RAM so I should not need additional drivers.
Maybe I need to look up the MS KB.

Got the answer from the MS Discussion Forums - I needed to install a third-party driver called InCD as XP only comes with the ability to read not write RAM disks.

That would explain why I needed a driver .. never bothered researching it .. "if toshiba says I need a driver .. so be it".
