lamma island flat I have just arrived in Hong Kong. I am kiwi female working as a programme officer for an NGO that works with assylum seekers and refugees. I would love to find a flat on Lama but am having trouble finding one. Does anyone know of any rooms going or know where the best place to look for infomation would be? Any help would be most appreciated.

Sorry to sound pedantic but have you tried Lamma itself? There are some estate agencies you could talk to. Alternatively, and you will probably get more info and a better deal, find a suitable watering hole / restaurant and strike up a conversation with any group of expat locals (they are a friendly bunch and don't bite) who should be able to give you the run down on the expat scene there and probably know of any flats available, or at least who to ask. Might save you paying the estate agency commission and get to meet some of your future neighbours too.

You could also visit their online community and if you're lucky a regular member here Lammarite will post some pointers too.

Hi Kate and welcome to HK. As mentioned , there are a few agencies on Lamma who handle rented flats for the owners, but there does seem to be a bit of a shortage at the moment. I noticed a few nights ago that Jackson's agency had very few rental flats advertised in his window compared to usual. Head over for a few drinks in the Island Bar / Deli Lamma / Fountainhead etc. and ask around. You could also print up some posters "Flat Wanted" type thing, with some details about what you 're looking for. Stick them up on the wall you walk past on the left as you get to the end of the ferry pier (make sure you get the ferry to Yung Shue Wan - not the other one). The wall is a sort of unofficial community notice board and is full of these sort of posters. Here's a 700sq ft flat available for $6000 per month: http://www.lamma.com.hk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3633 2 bedroom, so you just need to find a flatmate ;-) Last edited by Bungle; 08-12-2006 at 10:21 AM.

Ouch! I didn't realise Lamma was commanding those sorts of prices! Seems to have got a lot more expensive from when last time I looked. Could get a flat in Sheung Wan (albeit smaller) for that sort of money. Seems to be quite a premium compared to places on Lantau where I live.

actually the flat in lamma is not that expensive. but the truth is the landlord will mark up the price if they see u are a gweilo (a foreigner). My friend got a flat in lamma, he offered me hkd3000/month and i didnt take it as I dont want to wait 1 hour for a ferry to go home. and then he rented it to two gweilos at HKD5000.

A flat share would most likely cost more though.

coz he is my friend, i know he marked up the price not becoz they were sharing the flat but just becoz they were gweilos. but thats true, usually the landlord likes to rent the flat to single person or mark up the rental abit
