Experiences with plug in electric ovens?

Hi all,

My new apartment doesn't have a proper oven (only a microwave) - and I like baking. I've seen what appear to be minature electric ovens on sales in dept stores.

I'm kind of mystified as to why they don't just blow the fuse every time you turn them on, but that aside has anyone got one? Are they any good? (I'd be wanting to do roasts, biscuits, cakes etc etc).

i've been in hk for 12 years and in many different flats. only in my current flat have i had a proper oven. until recently, i did ALL of my cooking either stove-top, micro, or in a table top electric oven. i bought a moulinex as it seemed to have the largest capacity. i was even able to get a small turkey into it!

i don't know why they would blow the fuse, it NEVER happened to me. (almost all ovens in canada are electric. don't know why they would be any different.)

the biggest problem i had was time regulation when i was cooking. the small ovens get MUCH hotter than the big ones and much faster too! so if a recipe said "bake for 1 hour" it was usually done in 20-25 minutes! but once you figure it out, they work like a charm!

Hi Jenifa, yes they're good, i use mine all the time for toast, warming things up and occasional cooking. The higher end ones have a fan for convection-type cooking (ideal for a small roast). you'll probably be scared the first time you use it... there will be lotsa smoke. its just the protective oils burning off. so the first use just set it on high for 15 min and open the windows! Enjoy.

i want to get an oven myself. what should i be looking for when i shop for one and how much are they typically? would love to bake and roast stuff at home

Carang,

What brand of oven did you get? And what's its voltage or power? Am thinking of getting one. But issue as usual, my kitchen is so damn small that I'm actually thinking of using my mini spare room as a second kitchen if i get an oven.

i can't remember how much i paid, but i bought it about 6 years ago. i think it was around $2000. maybe a little cheaper, $1500. it lasted for 6 years and is still going strong (i sold it about a year ago to someone i know). for me, i was looking for the largest capacity possible because i wanted to be able to roast a turkey. i was able to manouvre a small turkey into it although it took a very long time to cook it as if the oven was too hot, the outside would burn but the inside would still be raw. what i ended up doing some years was cooking the turkey in the microwave then browning it in the oven. this seemed to work the best as i knew for sure that the turkey was cooked on the inside.

the one i had also had a rotissiere, but i only used it once. i found that the skewer was too close to the top of the oven for the chicken to turn properly.

i think that you need to think about what you want to use the oven for and then look for one that would best suit your needs. when i went shopping, i actually took a tape measure to measure the inside of the oven and i compared that way.

i bought a moulinex.
it was just a regular plug like everything else in HK... no idea of voltage etc. (i'm guessing 220 as that's the norm here)

Thanks Carang. Will probably have a look around soon. Or maybe when we move into a bigger place next year. Kitchen is very cluttered now. But I sure miss my oven!
