MBA programs: HK vs US

How are the MBA programs in Hong Kong? What is the quality of the teaching like? Is it any good? Are they comparable to top MBA programs in the US?

I'm currently taking a few post-graduate level classes at HKU SPACE and have been shocked by the low quality of instruction. I don't know if it's like this at all HK universities or if it's just because this is a "continuing" school. But the teachers (if you can call them that) have an over-reliance on Powerpoint presentations and spend all 3 hrs reading off it in their poor English.

I went to a top university in the States where the focus was on interactive discussions and independent thinking, in addition to learning the material. Here it seems focused on rote-memorisation without any analysis.

What are the MBA classes like here? Is it a similar teaching style? Any current or past students care to comment?

I think you will find this is a standard cultural pedagogic difference between Anglo-Saxon and Chinese schools and universities. If you want the US/UK style then you would be best going there I would think. Alternatively there are overseas universities offering MBAs here so that might be an option.

MBA course in Hong Kong is not that bad at all. HKUST arguably provides the best MBA course in Asia according to many sources. HKU and CUHK also rank quite high in terms of teaching quality and reputation.

Don't be misled by what you saw from any SPACE programme, HKU SPACE is similar to community colleges in US. The programmes are self-financed and everyone can enroll in the course.

I am not surprised by the passive and boring teaching style taught in SPACE, how could you get any good lecturer by a temporary contract with only $500 per hour?

I have a vested interest in posting the following link. Having made that disclaimer:

It seems that Asiaweek ignores HKUST for some reasons.

Besides that, in the footnote it said a number of schools did not participate, including "Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. India: Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta", ......etc etc. That explains quite a few things, bunnypanda.

Good MBAs are hard to find in Asia

I am also currently evaluating the MBA programs in HK. The impressions were between 'shocking' and 'disappointing'. Many Asian MBAs are as fake as the stuff sold on the streets (meaning, the label looks great, but the content is poor). The chinese education system highly relies on learning things by heart - not on understanding and interpreting problems. This is what I found in most local MBAs. The only program that is actually an eMBA is the one from Western Ontario http://www.ivey.com.hk/about_ivey.html. The classes highly rely on interaction (about 50% of the grading) and is mainly case study based (new cases, asian focused, not old recycled issues). The modules are also not very fincance biased (its a part of the curriculum, but most of it is aimed at real management issues). The program is very high ranked (as you might have found out, the ranking is a very arbitrary thing and every ranking body has a diffrent opininon). Costs are around 550K for 1.5 years and the class rooms are located in the HK Convention Center (very convenient and execellent infrastructure). Have a look at it, its definity worth it.
