Yumla's shady door policy

After being turned down at the door at Yumla so many times, I feel the need to share my experiences here with everyone.

I've gotten turned down at the door at least 9 out of 10 times. But what really upset me is that I went there last week and this week, with a different western female friend each time and they still turned us down, not to mention that fact that they both happened to be regulars there, know the door guy and owner, and have already been inside earlier that evening. When my friends and I confronted them, they were simply indifferent if not downright rude about it.

Even for the few times I got in, I was always treated badly. They always glared at me and my friends and gave us dirty looks. They made it pretty clear that they didn't really want us to be there.

It's such a shame because that kind of attitude and policies simply contradict with the kind of music they play and the kind the ppl who hang out there. Some of my chinese DJ friends can't even get their friends in when they're playing there.

As much as I love the music they play, I simply can no longer recommend Yumla to my friends until they change their door policies and their attitude. Please share with us if you had similar experiences at Yumla, and spread the words about their shady door policies.

Hate to say this, but it does not say much about you as a person if you want to go to a place which does not want you, need you or has basic service levels.

What is it with people who want to pose at places where they don't belong?

Why do they glare at you? Why don't they want you there? Is it a racist thing or what. I'm sure they would not let me in because I am a very uncool old fart who thinks Marks and Spencer is a designer label. I'll stick to the bars in Wan Chai, they let anyone in.

You're right, it says nothing about me as a person, so why are you trying to imply something about me as a person? It's really uncalled for.

This is Yumla we're talking about, not Volar or Dragon-i or something. The crowd is general young, casual and unpretentious, the music is mainly underground electronic (which is really hard to find elsewhere in HK).

I try to go there only to support my DJ friends and the music I love. Sometimes they bring in underground international DJs that no other clubs will book. Other times I run into ppl I know who just came from there and wanna me to go back there with them.

In any case, racist door policies is inexcusible whether it's an upscale club or a casual one.

I have a right to voice my displease, and if you find such msg inappropiate for this forum you are more than welcome to delete it. But jumping into character accusation of me is juts cheap and dirty.

What's your ethnic background? I'm just curious as to why you think it's a racial thing.

FYI, I'm Chinese.

I was informed about the possible racial profiling @ the door by some the ppl I know in the club/bar industry, mainly DJs, promoters and bartenders. Quite a few of them worked there, played there or had direct dealing with them in other ways. I took it with a grain of salt at first. But as I know more ppl in town, there have been many occassions where my western friends who are regulars there, went there and left and then came back with their asian friends (including myself) and they almost always turn us down.

I know it's not conclusive, but racial discrimination simply can't be easily proven. I'm just writing here to vent and maybe hopefully others who read this would do a little digging on their own if they care about it enough. I most certainly don't expect anyone to just take my word for it.

Ok, may be it was a bit uncalled for, but ... seriously, you've actually tried to go back to a place that made it clear they did not want you there. Why in gods name would you want to go to a place that does not care about you or your businesses.
