| I got a PS3 ....... my friend was moving so he sold his one cheap, along with all the gubbin's. My thoughts are it is trying to be too many things. Jack of all trades, if you know what I mean.
As a media server it's fairly shite. It doesn't recognise windows sub folders. Files have to be formatted in FAT32. NTFS isn't supported. Sony claim it plays a variety of media file types (ie. avi, mpeg), but unfortunately Sony's codec's seem to pre-date World War II so the system cannot play back avi's downloaded from the net. It doesn't recognise many external USB devices either for some unknown reason.
As a blue ray player it is difficult to say as I haven't compared it to a dedicated BR player from Pioneer or Panasonic. That said, Planet Earth box set looks absolutely stunning. Wonderfully resolved detail and really decent material to show piece the detail high def brings.
As a browser it is shite. When it works its great, but unfortunately there were lots of bugs I found when browsing just regular sites. Java is particularly buggy and it is not the quickest of cats either.
The Sony PS3 operating system is a joke. I cannot believe they released this. For example, it doesn't recognise files with two dots in it! eg. "10. Songabc.mp3". Try it for yourself. You have to rename this file to "10 - Songabc.mp3". The fact that they release updates every two weeks says it all.
As a gaming machine it is more convincing, but even the most sold fan would admit that decent games are thin on the ground. I cannot play PAL games in a PAL machine! I know there are in-compatabilities but this game is original GT4 disc from Polyphony!
Having said all of that, the PS3 will be worth it on the release of Gran Turismo HD alone...... :-)
