Glutenfree

Hello,

I'm a student in the Netherlands and at the beginning of january I will depart for Hong Kong, to study there as an exchange student at CUHK.

I have to follow a glutenfree diet. My question therefore is, where can I buy glutenfree products? what are good substitutes that are available? (especially for bread (breakfast/lunch) Can you buy yoghurt in HK? Any information is welcome since, uptill now, I have not meet anyone who has this diet in HK, not many people have this diet anyway.. So when you do, please give them my emailadress or send me an email! All information is welcome!
When you know more about this diet and travelling in Asia, your info is welcome too!

Thanks,

Arnout

Hello Arnout,

Being glutenfree in HK is not that difficult. I have been living glutenfree here since the past year. Yes, you can find bread, cereal, breakfast bars, yoghurt, etc here. You only have to make an extra effort sometimes to buy them, thats all. You should visit my thread posted here by mercury_element. Also you can visit this site www.health-gate.com (besides the ones mentioned on that thread). I find this store has good breads. They import it from the US or Canada. Although the doctor mentioned will not be able to help you much, he can still guide you a little (I've been to him). I'd advice you to stay open to all cuisines. That way you'll have a wider choice, even with a restricted diet.

And even after this, if you begin to panic on your arrival to HK, drop me a message. I'd be happy to help in any way I can. Or if you have any other questions, let me know.

Good luck!

These shops sell quite a wide variety of gluten free products:

Three Sixty
www.threesixtyhk.com (3/F grocery, 4/F food court) (Landmark, Central)
- brands: I especially like Nana's biscuits. Watch out for La Rose Noire as it's not 100% gluten free

Great Food Hall
(Seibu, Admiralty)
- brands: I like their gf stuff from Australia: Real Good Food, Freedom Foods, and also Organix from UK.

Little Giant
www.littlegianthk.com
(Causeway Bay) - specialty:
they have homemade gluten free bakery, and carry probably the widest range of gluten free grocery since it's a shop for autistic kids who are on gluten free dairy free diet. Trufree, Namaste and Enjoy Life are the brands I like best.

ingenue will become famous soon enough
I was at Wellcome (local supermarket chain) at the Belchers and saw a selection of gluten-free groceries in their health food section. Mind you, it's not huge, but it'll probably be more affordable there than at posher stores like Olivers and CitySuper (I'm assuming that cost might be an issue as you're still a student).

You'll find some gluten free products at City Super (at a price). There's also a good of health food shop across from Pizza Express on the escalator, that has a selection of some specialist foods.

Quick question. I will be in HK on Sept 28th for a couple of months.

Any of these shops mentioned in the above posts in Kowloon?

My biggest and only concern is being able to eat. I can eat fine if I cook it myself of course, but do any of you actually go out to eat if it is for Chinese food?

Thanks in advance.

City Super is in the Gateway on Canton Rd on Kowloon-side

The 360 is on Hong Kong Island at the Landmark extremely easy to get to by MTR.

You will also learn that several stores deliver to your door step too.

Thanks Alby. I will be staying in Ho Man Tin to start - for a month at least. Not having been to HK ever I am not sure where anything is but I am sure I will learn fast!

If in Ho Man Tin you may also consider checking out TASTE in Kowloon Tong at Festival Walk - easily accessible by both MTR and KCRC they seem to have quite a few items there the last time I visited.
