taking dogs on holiday Weird question, but I heard that you can take dogs on planes with you as carry-on and basically go on holiday with them. Is this true? does anyone have any info on this regarding what airlines and which countries won't have the quarantine laws? or am i just being a total gulliable fool!

i think that some domestic airlines will let you take dogs on board, however, there is NOT one int'l carrier that i've ever heard of that allows animals on board.( i could be wrong here though...) i know that you're having a hard time finding a place for your pooches when you go away. i wish we (dbdogdayz) could help. maybe once your anti-social dog becomes more socialised we'll be of some assistance. good luck!

Hi there - there are plenty of countries that don't require animals to go into quarantine (HK for instance) **provided your pets adhere to entry requirements**. This means up to date vacinations and a lot of form filling!! (I'm going through all this at the mo to move my 2 cats from the UK to here - but I looked into it a lot whilst I lived in the UK). For the health of the animal, if they are on a flight of more than an hour or so you couldn't expect them to stay squashed in a carry on bag - they would have to go in a proper size container - which means putting them in the hold. This would be stressful for them (and you!) and probably not something you would choose to do if you can avoid it - especially as they recommend that you don't try and to travel on the same flight, so you would be arriving at your destination at different times, then getting them through customs etc etc. All in all it would probably be hell for you both. But I feel for you, I can't bear being away from my little ones! Jen

Does this mean that if my dog has all entry requirements I can take her for a weekend to Singapore without a problem (Singapore is on the 'approved dog' list of the HK authorities. I am still afraid then upon returning to HK I do not see her for 4 months... thx

Well you'd need to check the entry and exit requirements at both ends - it might state they have to have been resident in the country for a certain amount of time. More importantly, you'd need to get a vet in Singapore to certify they are fit to travel, and probably Singapore Gov. forms as well if it's anything like the UK. Which isn't really practical if you're only going for a weekend. It's very easy to travel between EU countries on holiday as they've set up the Pet Passport scheme - but I'm not sure I'd risk trying to move animals between Asian countries for the sake of a holiday - the implications if it goes wrong are not good Jen

Hi jen, thx for your answer. Do you perhaps know if it is easy to take the dog for (a longer) holiday to France? Does HK recognize the EU dog passport?

Hi Icebear - I've never tried to take a pet to France, but I know if it is in the participating EU countries and has an EU Pet Passport they can travel *within* the EU relatively easily. However, as you'd be bringing your pet in from outside the EU you would need to check with the relevant French Gov dept. what their import procedure is. In the UK they would accept our cats Pet Passports when we come to return to the UK from HK with them but I don't know if it's the same for France. Does your dog have an EU Pet Passport? HK doesn't use the Pet Passport system, so you would still need to apply to bring your dog back into HK the normal way. Unless you're planning to be away for months I think the safest option is to leave your pet here though. Jen

Don't think it'll be a good idea. I'm thinking of bringing my dog from Spore and from what research mum has been doing, it's going to costs her about HK10,000 to bring her over. (Not sure, if she really found the cheapest per movers) and she was also told that if we go back to Spore, the dog has to be in quarantine for about 1 month or so. Will have to verify that though. Spore can be pretty strict about stuff like this. But if you have a dog from Australia (that's why furry girl is from) quarantine is not needed.
