Electronics CHEAP in Hong Kong

Does anyone know where the absolute cheapest place anywhere in Hong Kong is for the new generation iPod Nano (8 gb), or the new-gen. iPod Video (80 gb)?

Also, where is the cheapest place to buy Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo (the small one meant for PSP and cell phones) (4 or 8 gb)?

Oh, one more thing: Anybody know what the deal is with getting a PS3 and or Nintendo Wii anytime soon? I guess Hong Kong will get screwed as Japan gets everything first. Any retailers here that could import the Japanese version at a reasonable price? Japan version is NTSC 100 and Hong Kong is PAL 220 right? If anyone could clarify this situation it would be greatly appreciated. I know PS3 is region-free for games so games wont matter. I guess if I have an HDTV and am going all digital the whole PAL versus NTSC thing won't be an issue?

Thanks!

Apple have a price fixing policy, you'll only be able to save a few dollars. Pay in cash at Fortress or Broadway and get some freebies.

Flash media can be bought in any of the regular computer/game shops (Wan Chai, Mong Kok, Sham Shui Po). The 4 & 8GB duo's will certainly have a premium if you can find them. At least HK$3,000 for the 8GB I would think.

There are only 100,000 PS3's in Japan on launch, I would expect imports to be at least HK$6,000. Only 400,000 are scheduled for production this year at it looks like they are going to miss that. Games at least HK$600 but more likely ~$900.

NTSC usually plays on PAL equipment, just not the other way around. As long as your HDTV has a HDMI connector you should be ok.

Good luck! Your post subject certainly does not match what you are after :-)

Do you know where any specific game-centric shops are located? I have been to Wan Chai, SSP, etc, but only saw electronics/mobile/camera type stores. Only video game type store i've seen here is Toys R Us in Central, and i wasn't impressed.

Thanks for clearing up my PS3 questions, that helped. Looks like i'll have to settle for a 360 if i want something reasonable in the near future. I'm assuming Hong Kong will eventually get its own PAL version PS3 (maybe from Europe?)

The game console centre is at 188 Wanchai Road, Wanchai behind CCWU Building (which is on Hennessy Road and has a McDonalds).

Hong Kong usually borrows from Japan, China, and sometimes Taiwan, its too small a market for many items. Games are usually Japanese or American so the NTSC versions are useful. China generally makes MMORPG games for PC's, not a great console market.

It is actually a common tactic for companies to actually scale back production when they can actually produce enough to meet expectation. It is a study of economics where scarcity and demand increases the value and desire for something. I personally do not subscribe to the whole new console fiasco. As a matter of fact, I am just about to buy my PS2 this coming week. 6 years late but it should last me till PS3 drops to the 100 dollar mark.

mong kok and sham shui po have cheap electronics, but i would recommend checking out the price of ur product at every store and bargain for the lowest price you think ur product is worth. like if u're looking for a camcorder, and they tell u their asking price is $4000 HKD, bargain for $3000 or even lower. trust me, they set the price high because they know u're going to bargain with them. travellers who dont bargain for the lowest price will just get ripped off. oh, and do ur research on the product u want to buy. some of these hong kong sales are not honest. if they want to sell their old model products to you, they will persuade u to buy it by telling u the other products aren't as good.

the street they sell electronics in Sham Shui Po is Apliu St. if u're planning to go to sham shui po to shop, do NOT go to Golden Choice Co. OR Autumn Harvest Co. OR AV Express. these 3 stores are under the same company and they're not honest at all. if u tell them u're not satisfy with ur product, they give u horrible attitude and they just say to u "too bad". and if u want to exchange for another product, u have to paid an additional $400 HKD for their service. so u've gotta watch out.

Whoa, thread necromancy.

As an update the PS3 in HK is probably the cheapest in the world, Sony heavily subsidise it here. The US Wii is a little bit cheaper than the Japan Wii, same with games.

PS3 and Xbox 360 are available retail, Wii only available in markets. According to the local media the Xbox is apparently quite popular recently, even though globally the Wii is stronger.
