Sorry Sunnie,

Unfortunitly my search for a resonably priced TEFL/TESOL course has brought me to a dead end. I've booked a four week course in Zhu Hai near Macau. The course is with a company called International TEFL (www.teflcourse.net) Has anyone out there been with, or heard of this company? If so I really like to hear about it!

Thanks again for your input.

All the best

Yes this course is really good and backed by the British council, hence the price! Unfortunitly my peanut collection (HSBC bank account) is a little strung from my travels.

I wish you the best of luck for your course.

do NOT go with Itnl TEFOL

I took the course with Intl TESOL and while I learned a lot, it is NOT recognised by local universties or the EMB as an accredited course. While you may (as I did) be able to get a job teaching in HK, you are much better off getting your TESOL thru OUHK or the other uni's in HK
Good Luck

Gaaaarrrrr!!!! I was just waiting for that to be said. I wrote to them asking if they are recognised by local universities and they replied that they are. I guess hook, line and sinker!!!

Thanks for the warning mate, but unfortunitly they've already got my deposit! I guess it will be a good experiance anyhow! I'll just grit my teeth a try not to scream abuse at them when I get there.

Cheers

Hi I completed a course about 2 months ago in Edinburgh. Just some advice for you:

Go with one of the intensives that include teaching practice. I think the practice is what provides the greatest training by far.

I did it with a college certified with Trinity London (all colleges advertising this course award the CertTESOL at the end of the course). This seems to have focus on Teaching Practice, teaching methods, materials and acitivites. Apparently the actual method of teaching the course is up to the individual college, provided that the main points are met.

My understaind of CELTA (cambridge based) is that it has a much bigger grammatical focus and a bigger focus on use of textbooks. I also believed the curriculum is set by Cambridge so there is less variation in the teaching.

Hope that this information helps you.

I have done this course with TEFL International in Zhuhai this year.
It is a decent course if you have not taught before, gives you a basic idea of how to start teaching, but for the money it is a complete rip off. If you intend to learn a lot about grammar, do a different course, the teacher we had was diabolical. The company does very little for the money. The most useful part of the course is the actual teaching practise and peer feedback.

Good luck.

Thanks mate,

I'm already finding that there professionality is really poor. I have already signed up and payed the deposit! They say I need an F visa to take the course, which to my knowledge is a business visa. So I went to my agent who helps me with my visas and she said "that's bo*#ocks!" I needed to get a JW202 form of them attached with a admission notice to study in China. Is this right? And why on earth would you need to business visa to study?

I've beeen trying to contact the course administrator and anyone else who supposedly works their for help. When I call I think I'd get more response if they passed the phone to a monkey in the zoo and the administrator doesn't seem to be anywhere! I'm guessing they're off sipping gin and juice on the beach. It's been three days and no response or useful help, and my course starts this Saturday!

I'm going to try and get back my dosh! So if anyone knows of a good but cheap-ish course in Hong Kong, I'll have your babies!

All the best.
