Thumbs up Fishing or angling in HK

Hi
I’m moving to HK in January from Australia and I’m a fairly keen angler. Anyone here know if the fishing is any good, and if so, what species do you get? What sort of gear should I bring over?
Thanks for any help.

angling

My friends and I have had several fishing trips in HK without catching anything worth talking about, the water is too polluted, if you go out to the islands the water slightly cleaner but still don’t seem to catch anything, too much over fishing over the years.

There are off shore fishing trips which we are going to try sometime

ok thanks mate. I did hear a rumor that at certain times of the year the fishing gets better due to improved water quality from a change in currents?
I know the resevoirs are stocked - is there anything decent you can catch in them? All i can find info on is carp - that doesn't excite me too much...

Fresh Water Fishing

Chez,

Don’t have info on fresh water fishing as never really got into it; have seen some pretty big fish in reservoirs, not sure if or how to get a permit. I do a lot of hiking around the reservoirs very rare to c anyone fishing.

Hi chez,

It's either big game off the shores of HK or fresh water reservoir fishing.

If you go for fresh water than forget about any artificial baits.
I brought to HK my fine collection of twisters, wobblers, spinners etc. just to find out they won't work for the local fish as there's no fish of prey here.

I've seen how a local catched a huge yellowish/orange fish in the Tai Mei Tuk Reservoir in the district of Tai Po. I captured that on video. He even gutted the fish on site and took the huge beast home.

cheers azuremain,
sounds like i'll just bring my light gear. yellowish fish may have been edible goldfish or bighead? I'm not sure if goldfish go as large as you described, and i wouldn't eat bighead, so sounds interesting.

Yup, the Angler said it's a Bighead. Looked like a mutated Goldfish to me .
