"The Departed" - A Comedy?

We went to see "The Departed" this weekend and thought it was great! There were some funny exchanges in the film, which helped ease some of the more violent stuff. Problem was, it seems like the audience got the idea that this was a comedy and started laughing every time someone was shot, or at other dramatic parts. Kinda ruined it for me. This has happened before... one memorable one was in Talented Mr. Ripley, when Matt Damon imitates Jude Law's father to the letter. Sent chills down my spine (it was meant to be creepy), but the Singaporeans all laughed.
It can really throw off the feel of a movie. What's up with that???

The others in the audience may have been laughing at the way the movie was so similar to the original Infernal Affairs.

When I watched it, the audience only seemed to laugh at two unintentionally funny moments...

1. When the exchange was going down and the "Chinese" dealers were trying to speak Cantonese. I think that cracked up the audience. Seriously though, if you know you're going to show the movie in Hong Kong, and it's based off a Hong Kong movie, you'd think they'd get people that actually know how to speak Cantonese.

2. The climax. Which is kinda understandable in the way that it was set up. Unfortunately, I can't say much more otherwise I'd be giving it away to the one person out there who hasn't seen Infernal Affairs yet. :P

Infernal Affairs was dark, stylish and well-executed. Plus, very very original. But then again you'd have to understand HK's history of organized crime with the triads and the police to be able to understand the essence of the movie.

The Departed, being a remake, has a lot to live up to, especially when the original was so well done.

Totally agree.

I've no idea why those ABC or whatever nationality actors they are, can have a "Cantonese" dialect. Sounds completely out of place.
