Sorry to sideline the thread, but can someone explain to me what "underground" means in this context? I always thought it meant "clandestine", "(somehow) a bit illegal", etc. That being so, nothing that is mentioned on a big, popular, law-abiding website like Geoexpat is going to qualify is it?

Oh, and doesn't "Commercial" mean "people are prepared to pay money for it"? Welcome to Hong Kong - if you aren't prepared to pay then you came to the wrong place!

hey, c'mon, this is exactly the problem in HK: only popular things are accepted; same thing as e.g. with shopping mall culture, same clone chains everywhere.

culture is not rich without underground, stuff that is bubbling under and gaining small but dedicated following.

For hip-hop then, well, "underground" is rarely really "underground" in a sense that something that is underground today may easily become a chart topper tomorrow. Read more e.g. here:

There's apparently an underground techno/dance scene. Don't know about hip hop though as I can't stand it myself

eshwoor,

http://www.hkclubbing.com/forum/thread10983.html

I'm coming to look around Hong Kong for a week (thinking about moving in the new year) and wondered the same. I'm into DnB & Hip Hop amongst other stuff - found this night for the last night of my stay, looks alright. I'm keen to meet people already living in HK, let me know if you're up for going?

Cheers,

Mark

There's no underground hip-hop to speak of really. Not organized nights, anyway. There's lots of hip-hop parties for the champagne set though (Dragon I, Volar). Volar without doubt has the best hip-hop night (Saturdays) but good luck trying to get in. :P

Oh god. I just read Volar and underground in the same sentence. I'm just going to go into my corner and cry now.

You did? Then I think you need to go and revise your understanding of "sentence".
