Whoo!!!! I'm going to HKU aswell!

I'm currently studying at Birmingham Instatute of Art & Design, UK

I'm in my 2nd year of Industrial Product Design, and i'll also be going to the HKU the end of january!

is it really how i'm imagening it! buzzing city, full of lights and technology. WOW i can't wait!

I have a few questions about the HKU if some one could kindly respond to them.

firstly, hows the accomodation like? i heard it holds 3000+ students! scary!

Also how easy is it to travel? from the campus to city etc

Thank you,
I look forward to meeting you all ( proberly at some exchange student introduction thingy)

Transportation!

The University is IN the city!! Transportation really is NO big deal.. it is soooo convenient.. You don't ever feel the need to have a car..

You have mini buses and big buses working almost 24 hours of the day.. transportation is cheap and takes about 10 minutes to get to campus, if you are living in the halls near the medical faculty..

if you are living in the jockey club area near the flora ho gym.. then you don't need to take a bus.. you can walk it down to campus.. it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes...

don't worry.. Hong Kong is the most lively city I have seen... It never sleeps... and.. about there being 3,000 students in a residence.. ------- well, you are sharing your room with one.. or.. you have a single room.. if you have a single room.. NO ONE disturbs you unless it is time for the hall activities YOU voluntarily have signed up for..

It is really fun living in residence coz you have your own little private space.. the sanitation and hygine is very good.. and it is cheapper when compared to renting a place out..

It does get slightly noisy during oreintation period.. but it comes with the whole cultural exchange package... it is an experience worth living through!

I have to drop a line with regards to the residential issues that HKU offers. It does not fit everyone, generally degreetaking international students that have been here for a while move out and share apartments together etc.

I stayed in a hall the first 3 months, never again! I'm renting my own place in Kennedy Town since a year back, 15 minute walk from campus. My experiences from hall-life were dissapointing; Some have compulsory activities, all have policys about no visitors after 11pm, no alcohol...there's also alot of running, cheering, screaming, singing in the corridores through the nights...its a cultural thing and not at all what you will be used to...its not associated with partying (as one might expect in a uni) but instead hall-songs, chasing each other, ball games etc. (students behave quite immature in many ways) the rooms are tiny tiny tiny...you also have to share toilets, showers and kitchen with your floormates. The only good thing with hall-life is the low cost, it extremely cheap at about 7000HKD/semester or something...

Just remember to keep your expectations at a reasonable level, its going to be alot of fun for you to be an exchange students in HK with alot of partying, meeting new people, gaining experiences and get cultural insights...but international students are generally unhappy with hall-accomodation.

Big Thanks!

Big Thanks to Zeekhan & Raz,

To tell you the truth, I think I’m so excited of going to another country with a purpose rather that just a holiday, that I don't think I’ll mind about the halls. They sound reasonable ‘I think’, and it’s only for 5 months.

The furthest I’ve ever got from England is Italy so going to HK to study its seriously going to be the biggest thing that’s happened to me! I’m still sceptical about it all. But all your words have helped me a lot with making decisions about the exchange. So big thanks.

Raz you have an apartment how did you organize that? Can you speak Cantonese? Do I need to learn Cantonese fast or do people speak mainly in English?

Also Tiny, Shared Facilities and Kitchen with how many people?

Thank you for your replies, and sorry for asking so much questions.

Miah

Answers.. :)

Raz will let you know about the whole accomodation hopefully

You don't need to know Cantonese .. I have been living here for the past 1.5 years and haven't felt the need to learn Cantonese at all.. i mean.. there have been times that communicating would be alot easier with the local workers and drivers.. but seriously.. i still don't know chinese but can do almost everything..

hmmm... and.. yes.. the kitchen and the toilets in the hall are shared by approximately 12 people.. BUT.. the toilets are big.. with 2showers and 3 toilet cubicles.. The hall authorities clean the toilets everyday .. and make sure it is clean for use ... soo.. don't worry about the hygine part of the whole thing... And most of the locals go back home for the weekend.. soo the hall is usually quite during the weekends..

and.. yes.. raz is right about the rules.. but.. it is 12 at midnight that is the cut off for visitors.. and yes.. no alcohol.. but you can come back home drunk at any point of time at night maybe i am just making excuses to think that hall life is the best ever..

Anyway.. what ever you choose.. Hong Kong you will love!! and that i am certain about !!!
