| Gym Hi all, I'm looking for a less commercialized gym in Hong Kong...preferably somewhere I can do olympic lifting.. or just somewhere a bit more old and rusty...no california, fitness first, waterfall, pure fitness, physical.... thanks! |

| Me too, I'm getting tired of physical. The damned cheesy techno music they play is distracting, there's one single squat rack that people use for doing pullups, and there's no room for doing any proper deadlifting. I want a place that's quiet, simple, and is just about lifting some iron. |

i haven't been to physical before but i heard its jammed packed there.... I go to cali right now, i prefer ghetto mongkok location since there is more floor space than other ones....deadlifting isn't actually a problem there, i just put the bar on the floor and people would know better and stay clear, otherwise not my fault if i crush their feet!!!! Olympic lifts on the other hand I'm scared of hitting some retarded in the face.... for music i just crack up my headphones and good to .... THE WORST is when someone needs something and taps me on the shoulder during my set!!!! jesus fuck hey pull ups on the squat rack is better than curling in there! |

| What's wrong with the muncipal gyms if all you want is weights and basic equipment? http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/lschemes/rufr/en/rooms.php |

| you also have to attend a 3 hour briefing in order to use the municipal gyms, and I should point out that many of them are fitness rooms as opposed to dedicated weights gyms. The briefing can be a real pain to get onto if you are in an area that uses a balloting system for allocating the places. The max number of people is normally 20 and the spaces fill up within minutes of the course being advertised. If you are after a strictly bodybuilding gym where you will just get serious people going, then I am not sure how many are around. I haven't been looking myself around Island and Kowloon as I spend very little time there, however, these gyms do exist as there is one in Tai Po where I live. Nothing but barbells, benches, dumbells, smiths machine and the like. It is a pretty small place but functional. So they haven't all been killed off by the big fitness companies. You can pay a monthly fee (about $300) and go as many times as you want, or just pay a one off $40 fee for a single session. However I suspect this is too far to come, but at least it proves there are some around. Good luck, hope you find one closer to home, most likely it will be hidden away like everything else in HK: a small street sign, an anonymous doorway followed by a lift up to the 10th floor!! | Good luck and let me know if you find one. The municipal gyms would probably not have the gear you need - dbells up to a whopping 50 lbs and not a bench press in sight. I work out at California in Central and deadlift and squat to my heart's and legs' content - with chalk even though I am careful to chalk up over the rubbish bin - and no problems. If someone is using the friggin' squat rack for something they don't need it for ask them to move. Mornings are fine but I wouldn't tempt the evenings if you paid me - all them quarter rep arm and chest day everdayers would drive me nuts. As for the music, I ask them to turn it down every day and then it's not so bad. Techno is not as bad as - I kid you not - Barry frickin' Manilow singing Mandy. I felt my T levels drop and I picked up the plastic weights. I went into Power Gym in Jordan for a moment but it was just way too small and it wasn't cheaper or only barely. It would be great to build a small place somewhere - power racks, bumper plates, reverse hyper, chains, yada yada yada. |

| HAHA oh lord power gym in jordan, i went there same reasons thinking it was the only hope....well it was a dungeon alright, nice and dirty but nothing more......piece of crap it was!!! I remember they used to have a really good gym in XinHe building in yaumatei, in the top level..shut down though cause i guess not enough people!!! Central cali is alright, i wish i could go mornings , evenings just too crammed up in that little top floor....they really need a powerrack too!!!! Other wise the clientel there is better than other branches... If this wasn't HK(expansive rent) I'm totally in for start up a cheap gym of our own where we all pitch in!!! Quote:

| ha, the clientele is better? Good god, then I would end up killing people. I end up muttering curses all the time as I put dbells back into the right place - why the hell can't they read and put 45 where it says 45? Goddamn. Apparently they did have a power rack at the Cali but got rid of it - probably with a smith machine so people could squat or, as I saw some of the trainers do, barbell curls while standing on a bosu ball. Anyhow, one could bitch endlessly but it serves my needs quite well though, like you said, it would heaven to build a little hell hole somewhere. |
