Not so easy anymore, but check the buttons, zips and rivets. On the back of the top button there should be a number going across in line, usually 2 digits. Fakes usually have no number or the number is etched around the outside. Zips - Levi's do not use YKK zips! Rivets should shine - most fakes have dull rivets with a matt finish. The stitching, try and pull the legs at the sides. The Levi's label on the back pocket should have Levi's written in very clearly and the waist label can be different as well.
I've got a couple of pairs of 501's here, one original and another pair an extremely good copy from Turkey. The material is extremely good on the fakes - in fact they are very, very good copy and probably 95% of people wouldn't know they are not real. But put them beside the originals and start to look closely and you can actually see where they are different. Mind you I knew they were fake and they only cost me about 5 quid in Turkey so still a bargain!!
