Hi all! Wonderful site you have here. I have some questions regarding the process of applying for a HK ID card. I had sent an email to roa@immd.gov.hk last week but have not received any response yet. Below is the contents of my email to them. If anyone here can shed some light, I would very much appreciate it.

I was born in HK, and my family had immigrated to the US when I was 2 years old. I am currently 27 years old and will be going to HK for vacation in a few weeks using my US passport. I would like to be able to apply for a HK ID card during my 2 and a half week stay in HK. I can provide copies of my birth certificate and copies of my parent's HK ID cards. I would like to know if I need to provide any other documents. Since the process will take at least 6 weeks, will I need to stay in HK to receive the ID card or could it be mailed to me in the US? Do I need to make a reservation with the immigration office beforehand or can I just show up at the immigration office with my documents?

They don't want photocopies because there are already too many fake cards. they'll need your parents originals.

You'll need to provide the following:
Their original hong kong birth certificate, their marriage certificate either in HK or USA, their permanent HKID cards, their US passports, your long or full birth certificate, your passport and whatever else you can provide.... You can't do it by yourself, both of your parents must be present to sign some documents.

Even then, there's no warranty to say they will grant you a HKPID card right away.

Best to approach the Immigration Department in person and talk to the officer there for more info. Narrate your case and see if they can suggest something.....

Also check to see if your parents were holding an additional nationality (US) when you were born or if they only had Hong Kong permanent residency at that time.

If your born in Hong Kong, and your Parents are Hong Kong people, the process of obtaining a Permanent HKID is very different from a westerner who's not chinese and born outside of Hong Kong. We, hong kong people can avoid the 7 year delay and obtain a Permanent HKID, within a few weeks - It's our right! If you will.

But you must be able to satisfy the immigration people and every aspects of your paper work must be 100% correct, if your chinese name is spelt incorrect and doesn't match your passport, then you must correct this first.

I assume your born in Hong Kong, therefore you still be a British National, unless you've assumed US national... after which it's a little more complicated.

If your parents can't be with you, then i don't know will you be able to satisfy the immigration department. Because any Joe with the right contacts can obtain 'fake' ID cards for two people who are said to be your parents. (i'm not in anyway implying your parents aren't HK people, it's just something the HK Imm will be looking out for.)

Thanks for all your responses. At the time I was born, my parents were only HK permanent residents. After we immigrated to the US, we all became naturalized US citizens. What I plan to do is to bring my original HK birth certificate, and copies of my parent's id cards and marriage certificate and talk with the guys at HK immigration. If it is not enough, then I'll find out what's needed and try to plan another trip next year. I will be in HK from May 20 thru June 3. I'll keep you all posted.

Just as a followup... I finally did get an email response from them. It was basically a lengthly cut and paste of contents from the immigration website with no new information. Quite disappointed that this is what I get after waiting for 2 weeks for a response ...
