Max just go in person,they are VERY helpful. It will be easy to get HKID for you. My GF wasn't even born in HK, but since her parents were she was able to get it. You'll be under a different section, but you'll be able to get it, no problem.

Go in person and they will tell you exactly what to do.

I think at first you will need photocopies of documents such as your birth cert. your USA immigration card, and your parents' HKID's, etc. That will get the process going. Eventually you'll need to go to the immigration centre in Wan Chai IN PERSON and show them the original documents. Then you'll get your picture taken right there (on another floor) and they'll send your card in a few weeks.

You can't get it without being here. Your parents don't have to be around, but you'll definitely need one of them to lend you their original documents (use FedEx)

I was wondering, do both parents have to be born in HK. My father was born in HK. My mother was not. Does that affect my chances of getting an HKID.
Furthermore, does it matter if you are "pure" chinese or of mixed heritage.

I think only one of your parents is enough, but you both have to have chinese nationality as defined by them which can include people of mixed heritage.

Hi all. Just as a followup, I went to the Wanchai Immigration center. They asked me to fill in the Verification of Eligibility for Permanent Identity Card form and to mail it back. I filled out the form, enclosed copies of 1) my birth certificate, 2) my US Passport (main info page plus page showing the stamps of my HK entry). Because I would not be HK at the time they process my form, I had to enclose a letter authorizing a local contact person to handle matters on my behalf. The process supposedly takes 6-8 weeks. Once deemed "eligible" for the card, then I would submit the actual application for HKID card the next time I'm in HK. I'm back in NY now, so I'm just waiting...

The job market in HK does not look very encouraging ... folks there seem to be overworked and lack job security getting paid peanuts... management seems to be reluctant on hiring staff and investing on technology even if they have the money ...

Hi all. I found out yesterday that HK immigration has setup an appointment for me to meet with them to show them my original documents for Aug 03, 2004. Since I'm the US now, I am thinking of postponing the appointment until September or October.

But before I contact HK immigration and request time off from work from my managers I would like to know whether or not I would need to pick up my id card (assuming all goes well) in person? I obviously would like to avoid needing to fly to HK for a third time just to pick up the ID card.

I have about two weeks of vacation time left for this year so I would like to know how best to use them. Does anyone know if someone can pick up the id card on my behalf or for them to mail it to me here in the US? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I recently got my HK Id during the summer. You need your birth certificate and also, bring your US passport. They need to make sure that your name on your US passport and HK birth certificate is identical. Also, bring your parent's papers also. The whole process takes about 10 to 15 days! I got mine card at Cheung Sha Wan.

hi just a stupid question - is HK ID same as residence id or working permit? would someone tell me what are the documents to be submitted in order for someone like me (chinese citizen) to get a HK id?
