Relocation Assistance

Hi All

In the process of considering an offer to work in Hong Kong and therefore need advice on a number of issues. Be grateful if you could help to eleviate some of the unknows:

- A Hong Kong Agent put me forward for this role while I'm based in London. The job offers deem to be a local hired but with relocation assistance. For a VP within an investment bank, (I know this is an open question) what is an acceptable relocation assistance. A rough idea will do? i.e. what's should be on the table.
- How many annual holiday do you get in Hong Kong?

For the holidays 10 is the legal minimum (plus a few more public holidays than you get in the UK). The norm is in the range 12-20, but some people have up to 30. It's very much down to what you can negotiate.

As a "relocator," I would suggest the average you get for relocating is:
* a full shipment (dependent on family size) - perhaps then try to negotiate, a smaller shipment and cash equivalent since your furnishings may not fit in HK.
* a cash allowance to help get you set up with appliances, etc. that you can't bring from where ever you are now (around 7-10 k USD minimum depending on your current salary, use 2 months salary as a guide if you make considerably more)
* a day with a destination service firm (to show around the areas)
* a home search trip, for you (and your spouse) to come and meet with a realtor, see the areas, etc.
* Realtor assistance to find a reasonable place to live.
* Assistance back home to sell your current home (if applicable)

State what you want...

I think generally you have to know in your mind what is the things you need to make this move feasible to you.

Like for us, I wanted to make sure that in addition to helping us sell our home and moving out here, that we also got an allowance for travel back home to the States yearly and that they paid for relocating my pets. Seems like little things, but both are extremely expensive and it helped make our decision to move out here.

Just basically decide what is the minimal things you would need in order to make this move worth it for you and then see what they offer, and if it doesn't have that "minimum" that you wanted, make a counteroffer. You don't want to sign any contract unless you can live with it for your duration here.

Hope that helped...
