| | 3G Mobile phones I've got some questions about 3G mobile phones....Pardon my stupidity in these areas. What is the difference between the 3G and GSM Network? Is it worth getting on to the 3G network. I'm thinking to get a new mobile. Hopefully I can find a company which will get me a good price for a MotoMing. What's the price of a MotoMing with a contract? Is MotoMing a 3G phone? If not, can anyone recommend a good 3G phones. And yes, I'm over Nokia...Sorry, used to be a nokia lover...but....the love fizzled out.. | |

| | WRT the Ming Google helps. And no it is not a 3G phone but is cool looking.
GSM is also known as 2G. 3G is newer and can let you watch videos over the air plus other over sold marketing bs. Being newer 3G will have poorer coverage than existing 2G networks. 3G phones also have fewer functions but this is changing. Very few 3G phones have the full set of pda functions but that is slowly changing too. 3G phones are being sold cheap with long 3G phone contracts as the 3G license holders need the revenue.
If I were you I'd get the Ming.

| | | Thanks Disco, so your suggestion is to stick with the 2G phones for a while till the 3G technology gets better in HK? Do you know which company offers the best deal for the Ming? And yes, I've to admit, I'm just attracted to the looks of the phone.... | |

| | | Sigh. 3G = 3rd generation of phones, 2G = 2nd generation 3.5G = HSDPA data.
If anyone tells you that 3G phones are not good or too new, this is very untrue. 3G phones are 3rd generation and they give better reception with backward frequency to 2G phones.
exp. Nokia n series are all quad band for North america and Asia (2G). However 3G uses a new frequencey wcdma 2100mhz compared to 2G phones which only uses 850mhz, 900mhz, 1800mhz, 1900mhz. Saying that the 2100mhz network is better quality and is supported from countries such as Japan and Korea. To finalize 3G phones are true WORLD PHONES.
3G phones and 3.5g phones also have faster data packet than edge or gprs. 3.5g is mobile broadband. 3g is like high speed light.
I do belive you should get a 3G phone if you travel and want better reception. Also 3G phones have more functions than 2G phones. Forget American motorola Crap.

| | 3G phones in HK will give you the same reception or even better than a 2G phone. 3G wcdma 2100 network are also used in japan and korea with 3G expanding in North America and Europe with the WCDMA network.
So if you want to pay a bit more. Get a 3G phone also you can video talk due to the high speed data. But final decision is up to you.

| | | As takeanu said 3G phones are backwards compatible. Therefore should they be in an area that's not covered by 3G then they will revert to 2G networks. They in essence still work but only with 2G functionality. These areas are very few and far between nowadays and are usually limited to a few tunnels or the odd out of the way place. | | Tools | Search | | | | | Rate This Thread | | | All times are GMT +8.
