You should head out to Wong Shek pier early on a Saturday (around 09:00am) and join the throngs that catch the ferry to Tap Mun Island. The place is absolutely buzzing at that time. loads of friendly walkers to get chatting to

(bus 94 goes from Sai Kung terminus to Wong Shek pier, journey takes about 25 mins)

It's funny to hike in HK!
my cell group in church organise some hiking activities as well as sport climbing per month.
and there are so called "Mountaincraft course (MC course)" in HK to introduce the basic knowledge of hiking in HK.
for MC level 1, it's 1 3-hr lecture with 1 hiking day for practical lesson, fee around 300 to 500 per head. for english speaking lesson, better contact outward bound hk. higher fee but best arrangment.
if you want to gather a small group and find a trainer, i know a few Mc trainers. Maybe they can teach Mc in English (I guess!!)

I always arrange hiking activities. The difficulty level is quite low. Sometimes hiking destination is similar as for walking. The day always at public holiday or start at Sunday noon. No foreign to join by now.
