WantingOut is on a distinguished road
Staff salary

I have been here for only a year and still don't understand the salary system. I operate a very small enterprise.

For a small (4 person company) with very small sales, in the Chai Wan area near the MTR, what shall I be offering for:

Office Clerk all around duties such as phone, filing, errands
Book keeper, part time or full time if they manage the tiny office
Driver for car for errands and small deliveries
Workman, to pack orders, run errands

I would so appreciate some guidance. I am not IBM or Microsoft and just because I'm a foreigner, I don't want to have to pay double.

Thanks for any help.

The big issue is the fluency of english that you need.... if you can find a good office manager who you trust, they can then manage the non-english speaking staff -- who can be hired for fairly cheap.

If you need everyone to speak english, you can expect to pay a slight premium.

You might also want to consider a local courier or delivery service for your deliveries. Might work out cheaper if you don't have the volume to begin with.

I am in need of just one who speaks really good English the others just a bit.

I already outsource all of my regular deliveries.

It seems all the locals want to work in a big office to have lots of pals to eat lunch with and to do whatever it is that motivates them.
They seem to work for much less if it's for a well known company I am finding....just for the prestige I guess?

My office is very lovely, but I'm a no body so to speak.

Well .. we have that same problem. Keep looking .. you'll find that some of the older folks (40+) are more willing to work for the money than the younger kids who have a sense of entitlement.

I'm older myself but I look 20 years younger than I am and I find the constant lectures from the 40 to 50 year olds so very annoying.....you should not drink cold water, it's bad for you. We need some plants for better fung shui.........you make more money if we burn the lucky paper.....

Oh my, don't lick the stamps......on and on and on and yet they won't wash their hands after using the toliet, don't brush their teeth or wash their hair often (youngs one also.). I'm at my wits end but of course will not give up.

I just cannot afford 40,00 a month for an expat hot shot...rock and a hard place I am.

Rock .. hard place .. rock .. hard place ...

Sorry, could not resist that. Given the bad luck I've had with some of the people we've hired in the past, I'll take a little bit of lecturing for someone who shows up on time and takes solid pride in what they do.

Look at dependants.. if the job is challenging enough (none of the ones you've listed are..) then there is a good chance you can get someone to help you out a few days a week. Many of the wives and husbands we know would gladly do something challenging and work for less in exchange the for the flexibility ...

Anyways, just a thought.
