Vinyl Records (LPs) in Hong Kong?

Hi there -

is anyone funky or modern enough to know where to get vinyl records in Hong Kongs? I have a modern turntable which sounds way better than my cd player so I'd like to start digging into records again.

Thanks for any help.

Vinyl records are rather thin on the ground (ha ha ha!). I've seen boxes of old records along Ap Liu Street.

Well, I have a lot - by my standards anyway - of LPs, both Classical & Folk music.

I've been averse to "tossing 'em out" even though I no longer have anything to play them on [A sharpened fingernail will not, I am assured, work]...... so I'd welcome an inspection and possible purchase.

Just call 2577-5777 [08:30 -22:00] Location - near HK Uni.

funny... last time I was in HK in TST.. right by the star ferry pier is a McDonalds and underneat in the basement is a 大家樂, Cafe de Coral... walk underneat there, past the arcade and junk and there is a record store down there.. they sell mostly CD's... but have a vinyl section with some decks to check out the vinyls.

I bought one or two vinyl recs and toted them back to the states. One of them sits framed right by my computer too!

talking about vinyl - what about buying stylus for turntable cartridges? I need to replace the stylus on my ortofon carts but have no idea where to go in HK for this.

Try Nelson Street in Mong Kok. Exit MK MTR station at exit E1 (or 2) labelled Bank Centre. Walk straight ahead and you will be on Nelson Street. Just on the right you will see some steps down next to a shoe shop. The basement is full of hi-fi/dvd shops.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone who participated in the thread.

Anyone who thinks that vinyl LPs are outdated is really backward. In London most of the modern drum & bass, hip-hop, soul and funk music as well as alternative limited releases all come out in vinyl.

Will try out the suggestions to see what's in the stores - thanks!

There is a shop called Rendezvous Records in Kowloon City Plaza which has loads of vinyl LP records. I was there last weekend.

I've also tried to find decent vinyl stockists in HK.

If you like 60's/70's music - there is a decent place on Chatham Road, TST, called 'Used Records Market' - you can pick up loads of albums from that era for around HK$50/album, which is a bargain.

The other places I've found tend to be ridiculously overpriced (including HMV - HK$80/12").

I have never checked out Rendezvous Records though, so might have to check it out.

I've found that ordering from the internet is probably the best thing, especially if it is for hard to find dance/hip-hop/reggae/dancehall etc. but I do miss my days of perusing through record shops in London.

Check out www.yp.com.hk & search for cd retailers - it brings up a list of all music retailers - I'm going through that list, hoping to find a gem & will keep you informed of any progress....
