Almond drink recipe

Not being in HK right now I miss the "almond drink" that I always used to have when going to Chinese fast-food cafes.
Does anyone have the recipe?

There's also a variation of the drink which is more like a porridge or soup. I'd like the recipe for that as well.
Thanks

Yes, I've managed to get hold of almond powder, which I then mixed with milk (rice milk actually) under a little heat and finally added a little sugar.
Still, it's not the same taste as in HK.
How do they make it in the fast food cafes?

I believe they use powder. The preparation might be too time-consuming for fast-food shops. Need to fry the two types of almonds with rice and wash and mix and drain etc....

Which brand you use? How you prepare that?

If you are talking about he "Hang Yan Sheung" in the Cha Chhan Tang or fast food shop in HK. Definitely that is made by dissolving the powder in hot water and evaporated milk.

You can use the "Po ma" almond powder or "Golden mountain" flavoured almond powder. They are the more popular choices of the fast food shops or Cha chhan Tang, especially the latter. It's cheaper. They are certain type of beverage, not ground almond powder. Therefore, you just add boiling water to it, no need to bring to boil.

Besides sugar and hot water, you have to add about 2 oz evaporated milk for one serving. The evaporated milk that you use, also will affect the taste. E.g. "Black and White cow" is the best choice for HK Milk Tea. However, some shop will use evaporated filled milk because it's cheaper, but the colour will be more yellow. If you want to get the familiar taste and colour, you should use the same type of milk which they use in that particular restaruant.

If you are talking about the "Heng Yan Cha" or Almond tea in Chinese dessert shop. That's prepared in different way --- Of course, I'm talking about the good quality Chinese dessert shop.

I hope this can help you. Preparation of almond drink in fast food shop or cha chann tang does not require any special technique. Just use the right ingredient.

Wow! You guys and the forum is great!!!!

When I said "Chinese fast food cafes" I didn't mean any specific place, but rather just those small eating places all over Tsim Sha Tsui (and other places of course) where you can get just about anything from noodle-soup, sandwiches to rice and pork for 20 dollars or whatever. I stayed for a month in HK in August and had breakfast and lunch every day at different cafes like that around in TST. Great food, great atmosphere and great price (except where they had separate "gwai-lo prices", thinking I was an idiot who wouldn't figure that out after being presented the bill).
I digress..
But boy do I miss HK (I grew up there and spent most of my childhood in HK, which is why this forum is such a nice place to be when I get "homesick").

Anyway, I think the almond powder I've bought here is just finely ground almonds. But even when mixed with milk you can feel that there's powder in it.
I have to try it with evaporated milk. Yes, I'm sure that'll affect the taste. But about that almond powder -do you think it's available outside of HK?
Is it different from just almonds which are cut up and ground into powder? Do they have some sort of secret ingredient in it?

Please do tell me about that desert, how that's made.
No Chinese cafes or desert shops here in Norway unfortunately
so I have to make it myself.

Also, please tell me about those cafes and desert shops -is it the desert shop with the logo that is red and has 3 golden Chinese characters on it; a chain desert-restaurant which is found all over HK?
I will want to visit those places the next time I go back to HK.

Sorry for the long post

What's inside that powder? Let me see...

Sucrose, corn starch, milk powder, almond, modified starch, whey, glucose, emulsifying agents, gelling agents, artificial and natural almond flavourings. This is why it taste Goooood!
