Best Hong Kong films

Hi Guys,

I am writing an article on Hong Kong film, a lighthearted look at how it's developed and where it is now, etc.

Wanted to get your ideas on what films I should be mentioning as quintessential Hong Kong classics. The article is aimed at tourists so it should be films people in Europe and the US are most likely to have seen.

Any ideas or top tens are welcomed.

Thanks
Rory

And early Chow Yun Fat / John Woo .... Prison Story, God of Gamblers... the spoof by Steven Chow is pretty hysterical).

One of my favorite spoofs by Steven Chow is From Beijing with love.

Rory, I'm sure you'll provide us with suitable attribution ... you know .. journalistic integrity and all.

Hi Rory,

I'm a local.

Two of the better known and outstanding HK movie directors are John Woo and Wong, Kar-Wai. You may want to mention in your article the following films:

Drama/Romance, directed by Wong Kar Wai:
1. As Tears Go By (Wong gok ka moon - 1988)
2. Chungking Express (Chung hing sam lam -1994)
3. In the Mood for Love (Fa yeung nin wa - 2000)

Action movies, directed by John Woo:
4. A Better Tomorrow I (Ying hung boon sik - 1986)
5. A Better Tomorrow II (Ying hung boon sik -1987)
6. Criss-Cross Over Four Seas (Zong heng si hai -1991)

I've seen all of the above and I think they are good.

What I like about Chow Yun Fat (and this is something that people used to seeing him the in crappy hollywood movies don't get to see) is his ability to change a tone of a scene with the look in his eyes. Sounds strange .. but you have to watch his movies to figure out that his is by far one of the most (if not the most) talented actors to have come out of Hong Kong.

Overrated in my opinion .. the better tommorrow / god of gambler series are actually far better.

Suzie Wong??!?!???
