Help: want to cancel contract with california gym

Dear all,

After I joint the california gym, I am very regret that I pay 20k for the menbership and personal training which is a big buget for me on the way back to home. And I am worry that I can't paid cred card for next month. Can I cancel the contract which I haven't used yet? I feel it is very unfair for customer who can't cancel the contract. you buy clooth, can get refund within 7 days. You take a course, you can also get refund with some penalty. Why we can't refund with some penalty?

Pease help.

Theres nothing that you can do about it I think.
Cut your losses and get out as soon as possible.

Although, you may want to enquire about transferring the membership to someone else - all you have to do is find someone who is willing to accept.

Let me get this straight: you haven't used the gym? Are you already a member? It does sound like you're stuck with it...go in and ask the manager. If you can't cancel it...work out hard and get your money's worth.

Actually .. on second thoughts. Talk to the consumer council and see if they have a mechanism to help you break your contract. They often have some options ....

I suspect there is a dedicated Q at the consumer council for people who have signed up with California and the like who are trying to do the same thing.

Yea ... it's like getting blood out of a stone trying to cancel their contracts.

As KIA mentioned, try the consumer council. Methinks their "personal training" is a big $@$@, well - def not worth the money anyways at that price. They always use hard sell tactics on ppl and one of my friend's was 'persuaded' to sign up for more sessions, with 'big' discount. Pah!

If you just signed up, don't you have a cooling off period with which to cancel?

Good luck!

I don't go to gym anymore, I take hot yoga ... way more effective IMO.

I remember when I cancelled my contract (month-to-month). I sent California a letter and sent a copy to my credit card company so they would ensure I was no longer charged. A friend of mine cancelled her contract and they conveniently lost the letter and continued charging her for another 3 months.

Exactly and I'd not be surprised if there is someone dedicated at the CC to deal with these gyms.
