What are the chances of getting a job in HK from outside HK

Would it be better to come to HK and apply in person?

Anyone has any experience to share?

PM or reply would be appreciated.

Thanks

you don't tell us your industry
your experience
you abilities (ie. language etc)
your qualifications
your expectations.....

we need a little more information...

It can be done.....

A couple of months ago I approached a recruitment agency in London that specialised in international placements. During an initial meeting I told them of my desire to work in HK etc.
About a month passed with no developments and then I told the agency I was going to be in HK the following week and said I was available for meetings, informal chats or interviews with prospective employers if they could arrange anything for me while I was there. To cut a long story short; I had three interviews on three consecutive days during my visit and I am currently waiting for my visa to be approved.

Therefore I think you need to at least visit HK and be on the ground for a week or two if you are serious about getting a job here. But I have to say that if the recruitment firm hadn’t opened the doors for me initially I never would have been in a position to make this happen, it’s all about contacts. Also, this all dependants on experience/what you have to offer as others have highlighted in their replies but there is a lot you can do to improve your chances.

Good luck

it does depend on the industry and the need for someone with your skills i think. i don't speak cantonese and i wasn't transferred internally. i sent my CV to my now-employers a month or so before they called me. there was no opening when i sent my CV but they called the moment something opened up and offered me the job right after i sent a sample of my work. To this day, i have yet to go to HK. i leave next week

Shameless, that's a great story! Wow, that agency is good!

I experienced the same thing. Didn't know anyone in HK, didn't speak a word of Cantonese. Didn't go to HK at all, except when companies flew me in for the final rounds. Got a job through my last job and MBA alumni networks.

Overall, you need to "get your foot at the door" (either through headhunters, previous contacts, etc.). Just blindly looking for a job would be tough.

I am in IT industry, have solid background in network/desktop support, and managing web project and web programming.

I speak Indonesian, Mandarin, English, Hokkien and Cantonese as well as a little bit of korean.

I was in HK but I didn't really search for job before.
I guess I will go to HK again and step into the office daily until i get a job.

btw, What are the websites for those agencies and headhunters?
and how does it work? part of our salary goes to them or?

anyway, thanks for the feedback guys

Hey

Am also interested in working in HK (short/medium/long term, at the moment I have no ties), I have around 10 yrs IT experience in Oracle, Java, Web Services, Security (a few feathers to the bow).. have been the lead technical guy working on high end projects for my company for a while, but feel I need to see more of the world and more of the far east... Am currently learning Cantonese & Mandarin.. (Canto first..)

What do you guys think are the chances? Any agencies I could approach that are good at this ? ..

Help would be much appreciated!.. Kind Regards
A.
