Well I was happy with what I got. I would not have got the same deal in Australia.
I do know about the warranty on the body, but in my op, you can't go wrong with the Canon.

TaLL|dUdE, next time I come back to HK, and if I want something like that again, I will pm or email you!! Looking at coming back in April or October 2009. (Saving my money again! )

Thanks for the advice guys!
Cheers

TaLL|dUdE,

Can you name one or two specific stores where you shop? Do you bargain with them? (I'm always under the impression in the photo shops that the price is rather final). I typically shop along the Stanley steet in Central, but the prices there tend to be a bit higher...than let's say than Wanchai Computer Centre or Causeway Bay (About 5-10% difference).

I'm looking for a place to sell back or trade in one of my lenses (Nikorr 18-135mm DX - D80 kit lens). Unfortunately, the few shops I normally go to, don't buy back lenses.

If you want to shop around for deals you can go to Wing Shing in Mongkok and the other shops in the electrical goods street where Wing Shing is.

If you want reasonable price and specialist gear you can also go to Kowloon Photo in Yau Ma Tei or Tin Cheung in Tsim Sha Tsui (don't go to the other shops in TST are they are mostly tourist scam places). Tin Cheung's site is here:

http://www.tincheungcamera.com.hk/

For buying and selling second hand gear you can try Tin Cheung or the arcade of second hand camera shops round the corner from Tin Cheung.

Thanks, I'll check them out this weekend. Hopefully, I can seel my lens and salvage some $$.

I never would have found Tin Cheung because I typically avoid everything (besides some restaraunts) in TST. I tend to avoid that area like a plague (due to the tourist factor and the fact that someone offers me a suit, a copy watch or handbag with every step that I take....The annoying constant hassle of TST kind of reminds me of Roppongi in Tokyo ..just not as interesting).

Well I don't feel as strongly about TST as you Climber07 (I find a polite no is all that is needed for the guys selling copy watches etc) but it's certainly correct to be wary of buying new cameras in TST. Tin Cheung are kosher though and well known by local photographers.

I don't know how competitive their prices are (for the seller) for secondhand gear so if you want to get some comparison prices then there's a whole arcade of second-hand camera shops round the corner (I think it's on Carnarvon Road on the left as it starts to go uphill towards Knutsford Terrace if memory serves me correctly) and they are also OK in my experience.

I don't really go to anyone specific. I usually just scout around first to get a feel for the market. Then I plunge in to which offers the best after service and best price.

If you wanna sell your lens, it would probably be better to just sell it here or one of the other expat sites, or sell it on one of the local photo forums (dcfever et al). Ask a local friend to post it for you.

Or you could ask Tin Cheung in TST as someone above has already posted. I sometimes buy from them. But do take note, they mostly sell gray market goods. So don't expect any warranty.

You could also try New Sankyo Camera Co. in the holiday Inn, entrance from Mody Road opposite the M exit of the MTR.
I know Tony, the owner 15+ years and he wouldn't cheat. He has a good knowledge on what he sells, but I don't think he would trade in something that he hadn't sold. Prices are always very close to the lowest available in the market.

bought mine at Mirama camera on stanley street. Body cost me 4750. didn't get a lense that day. Didn't barter too much but got the impression i wasn't going to get any further anyway and i was happy with the price. that was at the start of aug 07'. Wouldn't be surprised if you could get it cheaper now.

How much is it in Moscow and why don't you want to buy it there? If I were you, I would probably do it so, actually, because you would probably want a Russian warranty, if you spend most of the time there.
