| Work visa VS Dependent Visa Hello, I am a native Australian. I am planning find English teaching job in Hong Kong. I have got my TEFL qualification and some teaching experiences. But I do not have a degree. If a school is willing to sponsor me, what is the possibility of me getting a work visa? I have a girlfriend with permanent hk ID. She just got back from Australia with me. So she just started to look for work. If we were married, it is likely for me to get a dependent visa? I have heard that we will need to show our financial status to immigration. We have some saving and I had stable income. However,I have been doing volunteer teaching in China for a month. My girlfriend is not working. So I am unsure which method I should use to get the permission to work in Hong Kong. Would I still be able to apply for dependent visa if my work visa were rejected? My relationship with me girlfriend is genuine and I am moving to Hong Kong for her. Of course I'd also like to live in hong kong to experience something new. Many thanks |

Hi Mikel, My advice would be getting a job offer first, then apply for the work visa. As long as you could prove to the immigration that your salary meet the living standard bere in HK, it should be no problem to get your visa granted. For the dependent visa, it's gonna be quite difficult if you and your girlfriend are not married. Technically, your girlfriend cannot act as your dependent if the relationship is not legally recognized. I believe there're some visas she could apply to extend her stay in Hong Kong, (you may wanna check that out on the immigration webpage: http://www.immd.gov.hk/index.html). But if you guys are married, then it will be so much easier, her dependent visa will be granted as long as your work visa gets approved. On the other hand, if your work permit gets rejected, her dependent visa will not be granted neither. Hope the above help! Good luck on your job hunt! |
