401k vs MPF

i have a question.....

the MPF brochure I received today states that i can enroll in an overseas retirement fund and opt out of the MPF.

I am coming up to 1 year and will need to start the MPF, but should I?

is it better than 401k? i dont know much about this stuff...and usually ask my mom to advise....lol

what do you people do?

one good thing about MPF is... if you are only here for a few years, you can get the $ back before you leave.( you are only allowed to do this once). so you can go home with a nice nest egg.

There's no particular advantage to MPF over any other investment, and the funds available tend to be pretty safe investments (even the ones at what they call the high risk end of the scale). The good thing about MPF is that your employer must put the same amount in as you do (excluding AVCs) so you may essentially be able to get and extra HK$1000/month of income. But of course if you can negotiate with your employer to pay that $1K as extra salary to you then you will probably better off investing somewhere else, particularly if you can get a tax benefit from doing so.

Might be an issue with where you can invest your funds. Does your 401K offer asian equity tracking funds etc?

Does your employer have a way for you to contribute to 401k, a qualified retirement plan?
