Train from HK to Shanghai

Does anyone here have any experience going to Shanghai by train (from HK)? Any information will be helpful. Personal experiences are preferred, though, as that's the "reality".

Thanks in advance.

I haven't tried the train to Shanghai, but i've tried the train to Beijing. I guess the experience would be similar except we will see different view along the way.

The train is quite on time usually and safe. A few China Police will get on the train in Guangchou East station. However, the food on the train is sucks, remember to bring your own food for your meals.

Thanks for the feedback, francocw.

I hope you don't mind me asking a few more questions --

(1) Where IS the station for trains going to Beijing/Shanghai?
(2) How long was the travel?
(3) I'm presuming that the accommodations vary, but do they have beds?

Hey!

I've actually taken the aforementioned train once as I didn't trust Asian domestic airlines then.

The trip is approximately 24 hours each way, and is a phenomenal opportunity to see the country side and mingle with the locals. The train is extremely safe and the crew is very professional, and I believe the train has no intermediate destinations although it does stop occasionally at stations to refuel/resupply.

If I recall correctly, there were three classes and every ticket includes a sleeping berth. Luggage storage was on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The only gripe I had was the restrooms in "economy", which were pretty much an exposed hole leading down to the train tracks. If you walk forward a few cars to the private-room cars, however, there are actual metal toilets which made the trip much more bearable.

Still here cheering for DA BEARS! Learned from my Cubbies not to take losses personal and lowered my expectations! I use too many exclamation marks!! I'll be in HK mid December with some childhood friends so can't wait to get together and meet some others from the forum as well. Have a good one!
