Well, things look quite certain that we'll be moving to HK by year's end, and now its getting down to the nitty gritty. Below is a quick summary of the medical benefits we were offered through HSBC. This may be more information than needed, but what do your guys think of this coverage? Is it decent or low? Is it enough to cover pregancy and delivery?

Also, someone briefly mentioned that one should stay away from HSBC. Is there a reason for this?

Hospital Benefits

• Room & Board per day $1200
• Doctor's Visit per day (non-surgical) $1200
• Hospital Special Services $19000
• Surgeon's Fee $7000 (minor) - $87500 (complex)
• Operating Theater $2100 (minor) - 26250 (complex)
• Emergency Evacuation/Repatriation No limit

Outpatient Benefits

• Doctor's Visit per day (max 30/year) $300
• Specialist's Visit per day (max 10/year) $600
• X-Ray and Lab Tests $2000

I think your out-patient doctors visit cap is sufficient for only seeing Chinese, English speaking doctors, but not for seeing Western/foreign doctors/practices (around HKD600/visit for 3 days medication). You also need to check if the doctors bills are 100% reimbursable or if you need to pay a small loading.

Maternity costs is not normally covered by basic medical insurance so you need to check with your insurance provider. I hear from colleagues that at a local hospital the cost of a smooth delivery is around 3K, but for a private hospital between 30K - 60K - package covers stay in a main ward and some consultations/check-ups prior to the birth.

For me, the level of compentence is entirely down to the actual physician, but due to personal preference, some caucasians would rather be treated by other caucasians.

There is a comfort factor involved ... lots of bad western doc's and lots of good local docs. Eventually it evens out.

and of course, it depends on where u are from. most of my country friends are sworn off HK medical services and facilities.. not sure how warranted but i guess they have been pampered back home

The doctor's visits are indeed 100% covered. So aside from the doctor's visits, the coverage appears reasonable?

Also, does anyone know if there are issues with HSBC that one should be aware of?
