Landlord sells while negotiating lease

We came very close to signing a lease on an apartment the other day but the landlord (who, in hindsight, had been delaying things) ended up selling the place outright.
Does this happen often? It ruined a 2 week house finding trip as he pulled the stunt the night before we flew home....

Did he / you sign the preliminary agreement? if so, you should get some money as per the contract.

No signing of anything was done, unfortunately. He delayed all signing until he sold the place. Never even met the man as he did all the preliminary stuff through his wife. Our realtors were really happy....

Mine backed out the day we're supposed to sign the lease. Also delayed all the signing. That's HK "baptism of fire" for you

That means next time we have to have a solid back-up. Almost to the point of negotiating 2 leases and then signing one. Two can play this game.
