If your Chinese, How proud are you?

Recently I noticed this one thing.

In beautiful Hong Kong there's seems to be many problems, mostly to do with race among the Chinese community (hong Kongers and Mainlanders) and the status of being associated with PRC.

Personally, i have no problems with anyone from the mainland. Most seems to be honest people who come to Hong Kong to make more money and maybe seek a better life for their family.

So, I was wondering, Are you proud of being Chinese? and What is it that makes you feel less proud? and Why?

What is it that makes me feel less proud is people spitting on the ground, either spitting up spit, or other disgusting stuff, or people making sounds in their throat to cough something out....that is really disgusting and not sanitary...and really not a thing u come across in Canada or USA.

I am citizen of both Canada and HK, but now I consider myself more of a Canadian than a HKnese.

Even though PRC chinese and HK chinese are ALL chinese, but then alot of HK chinese people do discriminate the PRC ones...alot of reasons involved...

But then during my stay in HK for many months last year, I came across a lot of people with bad manners...don't know if its HK people culture or something?

Unhappy contrasting thoughts

I just find the attitude shown by local HKers towards the mainlanders extremely surprising and discouraging. Why is it the locals show such scorn to them? Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I know, most HK locals are also descendants from the same immigrant "stock". It is also these same "immigrants" that faced enormous hardships, made a lot of sacrifices, worked tirelessly to help their progeny enjoy the fruits of their labor and ultimately, this is the attitude the locals have to show for it.......sad.

HK vs. Mailand = different culture with different behaviour makes the difference.

For example: It seems to be normal for HK girls to have multiple boyfriends and on the mainland it's not a common practice; it doesn't mean it doesn't happen though!

But China isn't Canada or USA. And from their point of view, spiting is Normal, regardless of where you go. So is littering.

Care to name a few? I'm still trying to workout why? Mainly the reason for posting the thread in the first place. You know.

Maybe it's down the busy life everyone's subjected to. Although, if you get to know the locals, they're not really that rude.

Maybe there is more stereotyping than discrimination here. Just like african americans and mexcians are been stereotyped by a lot of americans.

Remember HK wasn't part of china till 97. HK didn't go through the culture revolution in the 60th and 70th. Historically the 2 places were very different in culture, economy and politics. HK has been an international spotlight for decads while china was sleeping. HK pepole probably hate to be assiciated with typical Chinese. And I belive the mainlanders do stereotyping too with people from different provinces. People who grow up in Bejing frowns on outsiders who come to Beging to work. It is like they have to share the same pie with more people except those people are generally hold manual labor jobs.

Hmm... interesting. But HK was only given to the British for 100 years. Prior to that, it had always been apart of China.

Currently, I'm 100% Proud to be Chinese.
It'll be 101% once I'm fluent with putonghua and guangdonghua... 'Who' want's to teach me? hehe...
