If I marry my HK sweetheart where do I stand?

Hey guys new to the forum so firstly a hello,

Over a year ago on holiday in Hong Kong I met my girl and have some how been able to keep it going long distance since then, and have been able to finance (some how) 3 holidays to Hong Kong in a year.

We have just arranged to go away together to Shanghai for Christmas (also includes my 21st ) and I'm thinking of popping the question, we are both desperate to be together and although we have talked about waiting to get married our minds are starting to sway to maybe doing it sooner.

If we did get married she could come to stay with me in the UK, however I really want to know about where I stand in terms of coming to live, work and study in HK (since I bloody love the place and hate it here lol). Am I right to understand I could apply for a Dependable visa or something? How long would I be able to stay with that, and could I work?

I am currently doing a Degree in Finance and Accounting and full time work (postman), so at the moment have no real skills to get a good job, thus, afford to live in HK. Although I'm talking to my Uni at the possibility of continuing my course abroad, could I afford.. with my girl, to live in HK (she's in the same situation but her course ends next July). And on the same subject, will being a skilled worker in Finance etc. areas put me in good stead for work in the near future?

Finally (im going off the main subject a lot im sorry) No matter what I really wanna end up living in HK at some stage of my life and am very aware of the sleeping giant that is now awake... would learning Mandarin first be of more use to me in a Business sence, even when living in HK

Thanks for any help guys!!!

You will need to be married to get a dependent visa. Immigration here, as everywhere, are not big on romance.

On the work front I am not an expert in the Finance and Accounting field but I would have thought getting a job in that area as a recent graduate would be limited I am afraid - there are many graduates here already. I would imagine her family will also grill you about how you are going to survive financially before they support the marriage.

But I hope love finds a way.

She's not big on her family and visa versa, she will probably end up here where I would have no problem supporting her what so ever. HK is more then likely a future move for me and I know it's gonna be a hard one at the end of the day. More to the point I was wondering how long I could stay on a dependent visa, and what I could do with it in terms of work and study.

My understanding is that you can stay on a dependent visa as long as she has the right to be here. They will ask about the financial situation though I think before they grant it. You can work (I assume study but not sure) IF you can find work. Go to the immigration web site - that will give you the info you need.

imangie is on a distinguished road
You are so nice to your sweetheart by thinking of moving to HK for her. It's really a big move. I wish my boyfriend could do that to me too. He loves me but I'm afraid to ask, he's just 23, still young. sigh! I dont know if i'd get married with him either.

I see no problem for you to get a accounting or finance job in HK if you have got a legal status. Of course, if you are smart enough, those big CPA and accounting firms will sponsor you.

Good luck.
