Expatriate has pissed of a few people
I don't go so much for the price as for the features.

There are basically two types of washing machines.

The European type, where the drum lays horizontically and you fill either from the top with opening of the drum, or from the front through the bulleye. Those have more or less automatic action and have an inbuilt heater.

The Japanses type, where the drum is vertically and is filled from the top.
This type is often used in Japan, and has no built-in heater.

I prefer the European type. I used the Japanese type for the first year in Hong Kong and it damaged my laundry. Other people like the Japanese type for their higher spin speed.
Some like the frontloader because they want to put something on top.
I like the top loader, as it's easier on the back.

So, I got a Zanussi.

The best washing machine manufacturers are Miele, Zanussi and Whirlpool. I have not used Miele, simply beyond my budget (the one I want is over 10K!!!) ...but Zanussi and Whirlpool are really good.

If given a choice between Panasonic and Haier, I, with no doubt, go for Panasonic.
